MoM Edwards - Dangerous wins a point for Rob Edwards

Championship strugglers Blackburn drew with managerless Wolves in a game marked by protests by home supporters.  Rovers fans showed their opposition to Indian owners Venky's by not taking their seats until the 18th minute and then walking out in the 75th minute. Sam Gallagher's superb early volley put Blackburn ahead at the break. Dave Edwards headed in Matt Doherty's cross to level but Wolves, who sacked Walter Zenga on Tuesday, are now without a win in their last six games. Blackburn fans held a protest outside the ground before kick-off, while the timing of their late entry and early departure reflected the date of the club's founding in 1875. Several banners criticising the club's owners were visible in the sparsely-populated stands at Ewood Park throughout the match. After falling behind the visitors, with caretaker boss Rob Edwards in the dugout amid reports Nigel Pearson has been interviewed to replace Zenga, looked bright and could have levelled through Edwards or Conor Coady before the break. Substitute goalkeeper Andy Lonergan denied Rovers striker Gallagher a second goal just after the hour mark and the hosts may have complaints about the equaliser, with Doherty narrowly offside when he picked up the ball after Blackburn keeper Jason Steele palmed away Joao Teixeira's shot. Victory would have lifted Rovers out of the relegation zone, but they are now 23rd, while Wolves are three points above the bottom three in 17th.

Full-back Derrick Williams is the latest addition to Blackburn's absentee list for the visit of Wolves.  Williams has a hamstring strain and joins Danny Graham (illness), Wes Brown (knee), Elliott Ward (ankle) and Adam Henley (hamstring) on the sidelines.

Caretaker boss Rob Edwards takes charge of Wolves for the first time following Walter Zenga's sacking on Tuesday. Striker Joe Mason will miss the next few weeks after learning he needs an operation on a hernia injury.

Analysis

BBC Radio Lancashire's Andy Bayes: "Blackburn Rovers didn't deserve to lose at Bristol City last weekend. The reality is though that they did, and remain entrenched in the relegation places. "Owen Coyle is convinced the team is making great strides since their horrendous start to the season, but individual errors are still costing them.  If they can reproduce the performance of their last home game, against Nottingham Forest, they can win this game. A planned supporters' protest will go ahead. It's unclear how many fans will enter Ewood Park on 18 minutes and leave on 75. What is clear though is that the divide between the owners in India and fan base in Lancashire shows no sign of getting any closer."

BBC WM 95.6's Mike Taylor: "Rob Edwards has been entrusted with looking after the team while the club find a permanent replacement for Walter Zenga, if "permanent" is an appropriate term in the Championship any more. "Could Edwards himself be given the chance in the long run? Several high-profile names have already been talked up as potential new bosses since Zenga's departure, but Edwards is well regarded at Molineux and it is not out of the question that he will be considered.  Edwards was - wisely - coy about touting himself for the job in his press conference this week. If it turns out that he fancies the challenge, a couple of wins before the international break would be the best way of stating his case."

Match facts

Blackburn have lost four consecutive league games against Wolves at Ewood Park. Only once before in their league history have they lost five in a row against an opponent at home (Sunderland between 1899 and 1904). Wolves have lost just one of their last eight league games against Rovers (W5 D2). Rovers have only managed to score in one of their last five league games (W1 D1 L3), beating Nottingham Forest 2-1 in their last league match at Ewood Park. Wolves are winless in their last five league games (D1 L4), failing to score in each of the last two.

Only Nottingham Forest (29) and Cardiff (26) have used more players than Blackburn in the Championship this season (25). Wolves are one of five sides yet to score in the opening 15 minutes of Championship games this season, while they've also conceded the most goals in this period (6).

Kemar Roofe's first goal for Leeds saw them beat Wolves at Molineux, as the home side's winless run in the Championship stretched to five matches. Former Oxford United forward Roofe, who arrived at Elland Road in July, turned home Hadi Sacko's cross from close range midway through the second half. Sacko should also have scored in the first half but chipped onto the bar. Joao Teixeira had Wolves' only shot on target, but his first-time effort in the box was saved by Rob Green.

Walter Zenga's Wolves have Benfica loan man Joao Teixeira pushing for a start as they aim to end a run of four games without a win at  to Leeds United. He came off the bench to good effect as Wolves lost 1-0 at Brighton in midweek.

Leeds, who have won just once in four matches, are still without winger Stuart Dallas (thigh) and skipper Liam Bridcutt (broken metatarsal). Boss Garry Monk has right-back Gaetano Berardi pushing to return following the 1-1  draw with Wigan Athletic.

Match facts

Leeds' 3-2 win at Molineux last season is the last time they scored three goals in an  game - they have scored 18 goals in 18  league games since.  The last three league games between these sides at Molineux have triggered an average of 5.3 goals per game, capped by a 3-2 Leeds win last time out.  That win at Molineux in December 2015 gives Leeds a chance to win back to back league games at Molineux for the first time since September 1973.  After enjoying back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Brentford, 16th-placed Wolves have now failed to win in four matches.  No Championship side has conceded more goals in the 90th minute or later this season than Leeds (3).  Leeds, in 14th, have lost their last two games, at Bristol City and Derby. They have not lost three consecutive  league games since December 2014.

TUE, 18 OCT 2016 Brighton & HA 1 Baldock (14' ) Wolves 0 HT 1-0

Sam Baldock's first-half header proved enough to give in-form Brighton a  victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Anthony Knockaert headed wide early on but striker Baldock made no mistake shortly after, guiding Gaetan Bong's cross into the top corner. Helder Costa came closest to equalising just before the break but his long-range shot was tipped over by Brighton goalkeeper David Stockdale. Wolves pressed late on with several corners but Brighton held on.  Pic - the Amex by Mark Feehan

Walter Zenga's Wolves went into the game having won just two of their past nine  league games with only one clean sheet and they conceded what turned out to be the winning goal after only 16 minutes. Full-back Bong whipped in a pinpoint cross which was headed  by Baldock for his third goal in three games as the Seagulls took control before the break. Top-scorer Glenn Murray almost doubled Brighton's lead early in the second half but his header was narrowly wide and a minute later Knockaert forced a fine save from Carl Ikeme with a long-range left-footed shot. Wolves committed men forward late on but, despite a succession of corner kicks in the dying minutes, Albion held on for victory and their eighth clean sheet in 13 games.  Brighton manager Chris Hughton: "It is very timely that Sam is in this form and I am very pleased for him. He's been good for us. He may not score too many with his head but he showed a desire to get across the defender. He is a  player, works hard for the  and he is at the right place at the right time."

Wolves head coach Walter Zenga: "It was a good game in my opinion but they scored and we didn't. We played at the same level as Brighton.  We were in the game and there was no difference in the s. I would prefer to play badly and take the points. In the last four games we have only taken one point, but we must believe in our job."

Brighton striker Tomer Hemed is a doubt after missing Saturday's 2-2 draw with Preston with a thigh strain.   Defender Liam Rosenior and midfielder Beram Kayal both have ankle injuries, while winger Kazenga LuaLua (knee) is also sidelined.  Wolves boss Walter Zenga could recall Joao Teixeira after the Benfica loanee was an unused substitute in Saturday's 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.  Jordan Graham (knee) remains out, along with Mike Williamson (glute).

Brighton manager Chris Hughton told BBC Sussex: "Wolves are in good form at the moment and I thought they were very good at Aston Villa on Saturday. They brought in a lot of players in the summer and sometimes it takes a longer for them to be incorporated but Walter Zenga has done it well. I have been impressed with what I have seen of them so far. They have a lot of energy going forward."

Match facts

Brighton have only won one of their last 10 league games against Wolves (D6 L3). Wolves kept clean sheets in both games against the Seagulls last season - they had only kept three clean sheets in their previous 24 league games against Brighton prior to last season. Brighton have kept more clean sheets than any other Championship side so far (seven in 12 games). Wolves have won just two of their last nine  league games (D3 L4), managing only one clean sheet in the process. The Seagulls have had just four different goalscorers in the league this season; the fewest of any Championship side. Danny Batth has made 143 clearances in the Championship this season; at least 16 more than any other player

Two missed sendings off and a stonewall penalty not given.  Coote shouldn't be refereeing at this level.

New Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce began his reign with a point as the local derby against Wolves ended in a draw.  But Villa Park's fifth  league draw in six games this season could quite easily have ended badly for Bruce.  Villa took the lead through Jonathan Kodjia's 15th-minute penalty, only for Wolves to level with a spot-kick of their own from Helder Costa.  But Wolves had enough second-half chances to have won comfortably.  On a day when Bruce's side began the game in the Championship's bottom three thanks to the day's earlier results, they ended it in 20th - nine points behind his old club Birmingham City, who occupy the last of the four play-off places.  And the new Villa boss certainly now knows the full size of the job he has taken on.  In a game of penalty decisions, two given, and one not, Wolves had the more raw deal. Villa's Jack Grealish had already given a warning of his close control before he got into the penalty area, where he went down under a challenge from Dominic Iorfa - his England Under-21 international -mate in midweek.  Kodjia converted the penalty, but Wolves levelled just 19 minutes later, also from the spot. - a far less controversial decision.  Having left Costa alone on the edge of the area, a desperately back-tracking Ally Cissokho tried to cover but the Wolves winger's goalbound left-foot curling shot struck his outstretched arm, and Costa himself converted the spotkick.  Wolves then had the best penalty shout of the lot early in the second half when Micah Richards bundled over Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, but nothing was given.  The visitors could feel aggrieved but they had only themselves to blame after that as Prince Oniangue and Bodvarsson both struck efforts wide, sub Nouha Dicko shot over from an angle and Oniangue was denied by a great save from Villa keeper Pierluigi Gollini.

Leandro Bacuna has served a suspension and is available for Steve Bruce's first match in charge of Aston Villa.  Gabby Agbonlahor, frozen out by ex-boss Roberto di Matteo, will be given a chance to return to the first  but, having not played since March, he is unlikely to feature.

Wolves forward Jon Dadi Bodvarsson could return after missing their last two matches with a groin injury.  Nouha Dicko is also close to full fitness after a long-term knee injury.

History repeats for Bruce

Bruce's first game in charge, at  to one of Villa's main local rivals, draws an obvious comparison with how it all began for him when appointed Birmingham manager in December 2001.  His reign as Blues boss also started with a game against Wolves - a 2-1 defeat at Molineux.  It adds to the irony that Bruce could so easily have been in charge of Wolves.  He was interviewed following Mick McCarthy's sacking in February 2012 and thought he had actually been offered the job, only for the Wolves board to change their mind following negative reaction on social media when news of his impending appointment leaked out.

Match facts

Aston Villa have won nine and lost just one of their last 14 league games against Wolves.  Wolves are unbeaten in their last three at Villa Park, winning one and drawing two.  Villa have picked up more cards than any other Championship  this season (36 yellows).  Wolves have lost their last two matches. They have not suffered three defeats in a row since February 2016.  Villa have won just one of their opening 11 games for the second season in a row and only the fourth time in their history.

Norwich City moved back up into the Championship's top two with an impressive victory at Wolves. The Canaries, who surrendered a 3-1 lead to lose at Newcastle on Wednesday, went ahead at Molineux when Cameron Jerome headed past Carl Ikeme. Robbie Brady doubled the advantage with a fine curling effort, moments after Nouha Dicko spurned a great chance in his first senior match for 13 months. Dave Edwards headed a late consolation for Wolves, who remain in 12th. Following eye-catching wins over Newcastle and Brentford, Walter Zenga's side have now lost successive matches for the first time this season - and they will rue several missed opportunities when the score was 1-0 against Norwich. Dicko, only just on as a substitute for his first appearance since suffering a cruciate ligament injury in August 2015, was most guilty, miscontrolling when well placed and then allowing Michael McGovern to make a smart save. Conor Coady also failed to hit the target from inside the area, shooting over the crossbar as the   pressed for an equaliser.  But Brady's superbly-taken goal from 25 yards proved decisive, giving Norwich their seventh league win of the season and their fifth in six matches.

Wolves boss Walter Zenga is again likely to make changes for the visit of second-placed Norwich City to Molineux.  Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Joe Mason are due to recover from the minor knocks that saw them miss the midweek 2-1 loss at Wigan, but Zenga insists Nouha Dicko (knee) is still a few weeks .  Norwich expect to have Swiss defender Timm Klose available after missing Wednesday's 4-3 defeat at Newcastle.  But midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is sidelined with a foot injury.   Former Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey will be making a quick return to Molineux, having left after 16 years' service to take up a similar role at Norwich following Wolves' Chinese takeover.  Wolves head coach Zenga also has a reunion with Norwich City going back a lot further, to November 1993, when he played for Inter Milan against the Canaries in a UEFA Cup third-round tie settled 2-0 on aggregate by late Dennis Bergkamp goals in both legs.

Match facts

Wolves are unbeaten in their last 13 league meetings with Norwich City at Molineux.  Norwich have scored at least twice in five of their last six league contests with Wolves, having netted 14 in the process. Wolves have lost just one of their last 12 league games at Molineux.  Norwich conceded in the 95th and 96th minutes to lose 4-3 against Newcastle on Wednesday night.

The Canaries have gone seven Championship fixtures without a clean sheet.Tue Sep 27th Wigan Athletic 2 Le Fondre (5' ), Grigg (88') WW 1 Oniangué (34')

HT 1-1

Wigan moved off the bottom of the Championship table as Will Grigg's late goal gave them victory over Wolves.  The striker latched on to a long ball with two minutes remaining and rounded Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.  Ex-Wolves striker Adam le Fondre had put Wigan ahead early on, turning in Max Power's cross from close range.  Prince Oniangue equalised for the visitors before the break with a low finish from 18 yards, before substitute Grigg's cool finish won it for Wigan.  The victory for Gary Caldwell's side was their first in nine league matches, their last win coming against Blackburn on 13 August, and sends them up to 21st.  Wolves went into the match following back-to-back wins against Newcastle and Brentford, but failed to produce the same attacking threat at the DW Stadium.  Le Fondre, who spent last season on loan at Molineux, became the third ex-Wolves player to score against his old side in Championship this campaign when he converted the simplest of chances from six yards.  After Congo captain Oniangue slotted into the bottom corner, Danny Batth almost added another for the visitors early in the second half, but his header was cleared off the line.  With the game heading towards a draw, Northern Ireland forward Grigg held off a weak challenge from Batth to give the Latics their second league win of the season.

Nick Powell could start for Wigan after making his return from a groin injury as a substitute in the Latics' draw with Fulham on 17 September.  Midfielder Alex Gilbey and defender Reece Burke remain out as Wigan seek a first win in eight league games.  Wolves striker Nouha Dicko will not feature despite making his return from a knee injury in an under-23 team game.  Ivan Cavaleiro could start after coming off the bench to score in the 3-1 victory over Brentford.

Analysis

BBC WM's Mike Taylor:  "After two wins and with a match against the bottom-placed team next, Wolves' promotion challenge could be ready to launch.  However, by Monday evening Walter Zenga was dialling back the euphoria, having shown the players a footballing video-nasty - a half-hour compilation of their mistakes during the win over Brentford. "Feet on the floor," as he sometimes likes to say with a slap of the table.  He may have been referring to the serious dither they had at 2-1 in the second half on Saturday, and they were somewhat fortunate that Brentford fluffed a big chance to equalise before Ivan Cavaleiro's goal varnished the result. All the same, the very least you can say is that the post-investment Wolves squad looks a lot more like scoring goals than in the second half of last season, and is winning over the Molineux patrons, as was noisily confirmed on Saturday. They're in the hunt."

Match facts

There has never been a goalless draw between these sides in any competition in 16 meetings stretching back to December 1985.  Wolves won on their last away league trip to the Latics but have never won back-to-back games there. Wigan have picked up just one win from their past 11 matches in the second tier (D2 L8). Wolves have kept just one clean sheet in their past 12 away league games, although it came last time out on the road.

Joao Teixeira scored his first two goals for Wolves as Walter Zenga's side beat Brentford at Molineux.  The winger, on loan from Benfica, opened the scoring just after the break with a shot which squeezed under visiting goalkeeper Daniel Bentley. He added a fortunate second, as his cross from a free-kick on the left bounced past everyone and in. Sullay Kaikai pulled a goal back for Brentford, before Ivan Cavaleiro scored a stoppage-time third for Wolves. Substitute Cavaleiro's tap-in from Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's cross came after the visitors had dominated the final 20 minutes, with Lasse Vibe and John Egan both missing good opportunities to equalise. Wolves had drawn six of their previous nine home Championship games and struggled to create chances in a dour first half, with Teixeira's claims for a penalty after a strong challenge from Maxime Colin the only highlight. However, it was the 22-year-old's fellow Portuguese midfielder Helder Costa who made Wolves' opener with a superb run, although former Southend keeper Bentley arguably should have done better to keep the impressive Teixeira's low effort out.  Palace loanee Kaikai's powerful finish from a tight angle made for a nervy finish for the home fans before record signing Cavaleiro made sure of all three points with his first goal for Wolves.

Wolves manager Walter Zenga: "We have to continue in this way and not forget where we have come from and where we want to arrive.  It is a long season and we don't want to forget that if everyone pulls together we can arrive where we want to be. I don't want to stay in the middle of the ranking (the league). I don't want to read the ranking until December and then we will talk. At the moment I don't know where we are now. Honest."

Brentford manager Dean Smith:  "We gave them cheap goals. Josh (McEachran) should probably have played it wide, ran into trouble and then we didn't have the balance right behind and they broke and scored. We've got to be better to prevent that but the second goal should have been our free-kick anyway, it certainly wasn't a free-kick for them, and they scored from that. The reaction to going two goals down was good and I thought Wolves started to panic towards the end. We put them under an awful lot of pressure and had some good chances."

Wolves boss Walter Zenga is likely to again make changes following Tuesday's 2-0 EFL Cup exit at Newcastle.  Nouha Dicko, who scored for the club's Under-23s against Middlesbrough in midweek, is close to full match fitness after a year out with a knee injury.    Brentford boss Dean Smith has no new injury worries as he looks to extend their unbeaten run to five matches.  Defender Callum Elder (knee), left-back Rico Henry (shoulder) and midfielder Alan Judge (leg) remain sidelined.  Former Walsall boss Smith enjoyed a successful first return to the West Midlands when his sixth-placed Bees snatched a late equaliser in their most recent  game, the 1-1 draw at Aston Villa.

Brentford head coach Dean Smith told BBC Radio London:  "We won't get too many better weeks than we did last week, with really good performances and good results off the back of it.  Our level of performance has to be right to get something out of the game. It is nice to be an underdog and go and surprise people.  The confidence is really good and the players believe in each other and what they are doing."

Analysis  BBC Radio London's Phil Parry: "Last week was very positive for the Bees, with a seven point haul from  games at Brighton and Aston Villa and Preston's visit to Griffin Park.  Anything close to that tally in the next eight days would do nicely ahead of the international break and with Scott Hogan firing, scoring five goals in the last three games, there will be confidence.  I understand it has been a good few days at the training ground and last season Brentford did the double over Wolves so they travel to Molineux with momentum."

Match facts

Wolves have drawn a blank in three of their last four league meetings with the Bees, failing to score in each of the last two.  In contrast, Brentford have netted 10 times (2.5 goals per game), winning three of those four clashes.  Wolves, in 10th, have drawn six of their last nine league games at Molineux.  Bees striker Scott Hogan has scored 13 goals in his last 12 Championship games, including a hat-trick in his last game against Preston.  Only three of Wolves' 10 league goals this season have been scored at .  Brentford, unbeaten in four games, have more ever-present Championship players than any other side this season. Hogan, John Egan, Ryan Woods, Daniel Bentley and Harlee Dean have all played a full 720 so far.

Yoan Gouffran scored a stunning goal as Newcastle avenged Saturday's league defeat by Wolves to reach the EFL Cup fourth round.  The Championship side suffered a shock 2-0  loss at the hands of their opponents but took a 29th-minute lead when Matt Ritchie sidefooted in.  Frenchman Gouffran doubled the lead two minutes later when he fired in a ferocious volley from Ritchie's cross. They also went close through Mohamed Diame whose chip came off the bar. The visitors produced very few chances. Magpies keeper Karl Darlow saved Jed Wallace's shot and then rushed out of his goal to block Ola John's attempt from four yards. Newcastle are at promotion rivals Aston Villa on Saturday and Wolves are at  to Brentford.

08 Newcastle 0 Wolves 2 Mbemba (29' og), Costa (62' )

Wolves bounced back from Tuesday's thrashing by Barnsley with a victory which ended Newcastle United's five-match Championship winning streak.  Chancel Mbemba turned Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's cross into his own net to give Wolves, who lost 4-0 to the Tykes in midweek, a half-time lead. Winger Helder Costa curled in a second from 18 yards just after the hour. Newcastle, 6-0 winners at QPR on Tuesday, ended the game with 10 men after Vernon Anita was sent off.

Newcastle 0 Wolves 2 - Report Tim Spiers

Wolves produced a stunning display to win 2-0 at in-form Newcastle United, writes Tim Spiers at St James' Park

It was the philosopher Sir Alex Ferguson who once said, "football, bloody hell". Never have his words been more apt.  Newcastle beat QPR 6-0 away from home on Tuesday. At the same time, Wolves were losing 4-0 at home to Barnsley.  Results like this just aren't supposed to happen. But if football was a predictable game, we wouldn't bother watching it.  The thousands of Wolves fans who made the long journey to the north east were very, very glad that they watched this particular game.  Walter Zenga's team were absolutely magnificent. Newcastle - who had won their past six matches - hadn't conceded a goal since August 17. Wolves could have scored at least four.  And they produced exactly the things that Zenga called for yesterday afternoon.   “I want to see the team compact, I want to see the reaction, I want to see them take back their honour,” the Italian said.  They were all those things and so much more.  They frustrated Newcastle from the outset with a tight, compact midfield. Romain Saiss was handed his long-awaited debut and the man who says he models his game on Sergio Busquets did a pretty decent impersonation of the Barcelona man, protecting the back four and winning the ball on countless occasions. David Edwards and Prince Onianague did likewise.  On the flanks Joao Teixeira and Helder Costa ran and ran and ran. Then they ran some more. And Costa in particular was a fantastic creative outlet.  So was Bodvarsson, who created the first goal. And the back four barely put a foot wrong, with Cameron Borthwick-Jackson putting in a composed display.  Newcastle's fans loudly voiced their frustration. Their players were frustrated too, at their lack of space. That frustration boiled over with a late red card.  Zenga had made five changes to his XI here, as he did on Tuesday. But make no mistake, Wolves played very much like a proper team here.

Sunday Telegraph

Fans who booed Wolves four days earlier at Molineux, were led in a “thunderclap” celebration at the final whistle by Iceland international Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, an influential figure throughout the game.  “Sometimes you can have ups and downs,” Walter Zenga, the Wolves manager, said:”I’m delighted with the reaction because we showed our supporters that the last 15 minutes in our previous game was an accident and something that can happen.  The players wanted to show a reaction because it was shocking for everybody, so the spirit of the team and how they approached the game is a big answer. The approach was very important The fans came to follow us and we had to give them something back.   It was difficult to find a player who didn’t give 100 per cent and, when everybody thinks in the same way and play for each other, you have a great match.”   Walter Zenga Wolves manager,

The warning signs were soon apparent yesterday for Newcastle and they were fortunate to survive after nine minutes when goalkeeper Matz Sels saved in quick succession from Bodvarsson and Costa before Bodvarsson struck the bar. Benitez was an increasingly agitated figure on the touchline over his side’s failure to get a foothold in the game before Ayoze finally forced an excellent save from Carl Ikeme midway through the half. Dwight Gayle’s mistimed header deprived him of a 28th minute goal from Matt Ritchie’s cross and, a minute later, an even more abject header from Mbema at the other end brought the opening goal as he directed Bodvarsson’s cross past his own keeper. It was the first goal conceded in 524 minutes of football by Newcastle, whose attempt to cancel it out continued to lack quality and conviction in a second-half before Costa capitalised on a slip by Perez and placed another one beyond Sels with a well-judged left-foot shot from 20 yards in the 62nd minute. Benitez responded instantly by sending on substitutes Christian Atsu and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but Ikeme, well protected by his central defenders Dominic Iorfa and Danny Batth, was untroubled apart from in the 77th minute when he saved with his feet from Mitrovic.

By then, some Newcastle supporters were on their way out of the ground and missed little apart from the dismissal of Anita for a foul on substitute Ivan Cavaleiro that appeared to be no worse than several other equally late challenges earlier in the game. Benitez said”It’s a bad day but we have to analyse what went wrong and try to understand why. It was not expected that we would start the game the way we started. You can make mistakes and have bad luck, but we started making mistake after mistake. But we had control and they were not creating anything when we scored the own goal. Then .the second goal was another mistake and we made too many. That’s why we lost. They were organised and working hard, but we made the wrong decisions and it’s difficult to manage when you have so many things wrong. The good thing when you have another game soon.”

That game is on Tuesday in the EFL Cup - and their opponents on Tyneside are Wolverhampton again.

Newcastle United boss may rotate his squad as he chases a sixth successive Championship victory when they face Wolves on Saturday.  Aleksandar Mitrovic, Ciaran Clark, Isaac Hayden, Ayoze Perez came in for their 6-0 win against QPR on Tuesday.

Wolves head coach Walter Zenga may make sweeping changes to his side after their 4-0 midweek defeat by Barnsley.  Zenga has not named an unchanged side this season and could hand debuts to Romain Saiss, Silvio and Ola John.

Match facts

After losing this season's first two matches, Newcastle have won five straight league games, netting 15 goals.  Following Tuesday's 4-0 home defeat by Barnsley, Wolves have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 11 away league games.  Newcastle have conceded just one goal in the second half of Championship games this season - two fewer than any other team.

Walter Zenga's Wolves have failed to find the net in three of their last five league games.  Newcastle are unbeaten in their last six league meetings with Wolves, since a 1-0 defeat at Molineux in April 1993.  Wolves have scored in each of their last 10 league games against Newcastle, although they have only kept one clean sheet in that time.

HT 0-0

Barnsley scored four second-half goals to thrash Wolves at Molineux and remain third in the Championship.  The Tykes, who have now won five of their last six matches, almost went behind early on when Richard Stearman's shot was cleared off the line.  But Conor Hourihane's strike put the visitors in front, before ex-Wolves player Adam Hammill drove home.

Saidy Janko curled in the third, before the Celtic loanee turned provider for Tom Bradshaw to strike the fourth. While Paul Heckingbottom's side's remarkable start to their first season back in the second tier continues, Walter Zenga's team have now taken one point from their last three games. But the hosts could have taken an early lead after Adam Davies tipped over Jack Price's second-minute free-kick and Stearman's shot sparked panic in the area, only for Barnsley to clear their lines.  The Tykes carried more threat going forward and it told when Hourihane, the Championship's player of the month for August, struck home after Marley Watkins' two initial efforts were blocked. Midfielder Hammill then quickly added a second when he was allowed into the Wolves area to shoot past Carl Ikeme, before Watkins set up debutant Janko to score only his second-ever professional goal.  Bradshaw then wrapped up proceedings from the six-yard area as the Tykes moved to within one point of leaders Huddersfield.

First Half begins.

Wolves boss Walter Zenga has already hinted that he is prepared to alternate between a Tuesday and a Saturday side now that he has so many options.  Following the 1-0 loss at Huddersfield which preceded the international break, he made seven changes for Saturday's 1-1 draw at  to Burton. Third-placed Barnsley may hand striker Adam Armstrong his first start after Saturday's brilliant winner at Preston. Fellow loan man Saidy Janko is also in line for his first full appearance. Tykes defender James Bree (hamstring) remains sidelined, but midfielder Sam Morsy and defender Cole Kpekawa made their debuts off the bench at Deepdale and are expected to be involved again.

Match facts

Wolves are unbeaten in their last 13  league meetings with Barnsley, of which they have won the last seven. Barnsley have lost 24 second-tier games at Molineux. Only against Leicester City (29) and Bristol City (25) have they lost more. Wolves are unbeaten in 10  league games, their best at Molineux since a 16-match unbeaten run stretching to September 2014. Barnsley's 12-point haul from their first six games is their best in the second tier since the promotion-winning season 1996-97, when they had 15 points.  Conor Hourihane has been involved in more goals than any other Championship player this season - scoring four, with two assists. Barnsley, up into third after four wins in five league games, start the game nine places ahead of Wolves in the Championship table.

Substitute Will Miller grabbed an injury-time equaliser as Burton denied Wolves a third win of the season.  Miller turned in Lloyd Dyer's cross in the fourth minute of added time.  Lucas Akins had a first-half penalty saved by Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme after Richard Stearman, in his first game since re-joining from Fulham, handled.  Prince Oniangue had broken the deadlock for Wolves in the second half of a tight match with a half-volley after good work from Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.  The Brewers edged the first half in the first meeting between the sides, with Jamie Ward forcing another good stop from Ikeme.   But Wolves, who are unbeaten in the league at home in 10 matches, came on strong late on with Bodvarsson wasting a free header from 10 yards, and Joe Mason poking wide from close range.  Miller's equaliser was the first time a visiting side had scored from open play at Molineux since February and left Burton 14th in the table, while Wolves dropped to 11th.

Wolves have no new injury concerns and are boosted by transfer window signings Ivan Cavaleiro and Romain Saiss.  Richard Stearman could feature for the hosts after rejoining on loan from Fulham and Nouha Dicko (knee) is close to fitness after a year out.  Burton will assess captain John Mousinho, who has missed the last two matches with a hamstring injury. Deadline-day signing Jamie Ward is also available, but defender Tom Flanagan (thigh) remains a doubt.

Match facts

This is the first meeting between the two sides. In four attempts, no Nigel Clough has ever beaten Wolves. His most recent attempt came as manager of Sheffield United in March 2014.  Wolves are unbeaten in nine successive Championship   games, of which five have ended goalless. Burton have scored a total of five goals in their two Championship   trips this season. No has scored more without winning. Wolves have not conceded a goal from open play at Molineux in the Championship in the last 847 minutes of action, since Adam Reach scored for Preston in February. Five of Burton's 10 league goals this season have been headers, a joint league-high with Barnsley

So three Wolves draws in less than 24 hours for Peter Abbott - Wolves U 18 drew 3-3 at Compton in the morning v Everton, while several London Wolves saw the U23s with Nouha Dicko draw 2-2 with West Ham.  Pix from Mark

A top of the table clash

Huddersfield Town 1 VLP , Wolverhampton Wanderers 0.

Rajiv van La Parra scored the only goal for Huddersfield as they beat his former club Wolves to go four points clear at the top of the Championship.  The Dutchman found the net early on, his first ever goal for Town, when he fired in the rebound after Nakhi Wells' shot struck the post.  Wolves' half-time substitute Joao Teixeira hit an upright from 20 yards. The visitors went close again when Jon Dadi Bodvarsson had a header saved by Danny Ward from point-blank range.  Van La Parra, who had a loan spell with Huddersfield last season, left Wolves to join the Terriers on a permanent deal in the summer. His goal came after just six minutes as he followed up Wells' shot to fire into the bottom-left corner in front of his former supporters. Wolves were much brighter after the restart, with former Town defender Conor Coady having a shot deflected for a corner and Matt Doherty's attempt well saved by Ward.  The Terriers keeper, who is on loan from Liverpool, then did brilliantly to deny Bodvarsson as the hosts held on to claim their fourth win and extend their unbeaten start to the Championship season to five games.

Early season leaders Huddersfield host third-placed Wolves, one of five fellow unbeaten Championship sides, who make the trip to one of their least favourite grounds.  New Terriers left-back Tareiq Holmes-Dennis could feature.  Wolves, who have lost on six of their last seven trips to Huddersfield, still have Cameron Borthwick-Jackson waiting to make his debut.

The Manchester United loanee was left on the bench against Cambridge. But Wolves are without midfielder Lee Evans, who is now not expected to return until after the international break, having been ruled out for a few weeks with a knee injury. And, although Nouha Dicko is closing in on a return, new boss Walter Zenga remains without defenders Silvio and Mike Williamson, as well as Michal Zyro and Jordan Graham, who have both undergone knee operations.

Match facts

This is Huddersfield's best start to a second-tier season after four games since 1969-70 when they also won three and drew one.  Huddersfield have won 10 times in 13 league games against Wolves, who have lost on six of their last seven trips to Huddersfield. Of the 13 s that the Terriers have played 70 or more times in the Football League, their best win percentage is against Wolves (41.9% - 31 wins from 74 games). Walter Zenga's Wolves have so far won a league-best four points from losing positions this season.

An interesting 2-6-1-1 formation as Peter Abbott presented the 2015-16 player of the season trophy to Matt Doherty before this second round match.  Here’s the presentation party with new manager Walter Zenga

Wolves

Tim Spiers view EFL Cup: Wolves 2 Cambridge 1 - Report and pictures (see link)

A tight 2-1 home victory against lower league opposition in the EFL Cup as a new Portuguese signing impresses on his full debut. Deja vu anyone?  For Crawley and Joao Teixeira in round one, read Cambridge and Helder Costa in round two. Also as in that game, Wolves scored an early goal and were expected to romp home by a big margin of victory. But again, suspect defending allowed the visitors back into the game. And in the final coincidence, Wolves had some clear-cut chances to put the lower league team out of sight, but failed to do so. Still, a win is a win, they're into next round and their impressive unbeaten start to the 2016/17 campaign is up to six matches. The worrying aspect for Zenga will be the defence, with Kortney Hause and Dominic Iorfa far from comfortable. The positives were an assured performance from Jack Price, another assist and a goal for Jed Wallace, and the full debut of Costa, whose pace and direct approach will trouble many a Championship defence. He scored, and also provided an assist, as well as winning a second half penalty which James Henry couldn't convert. There may be a few games like this as Zenga experiments with formations and personnel (he started with 4-4-1-1 here and tested out Conor Coady and George Saville at full back) and Wolves are of course a work in progress. But their EFL Cup record is notoriously bad so to avoid a banana skin - a potentially land a lucrative tie against a Premier League big boy in the next round - represents a decent night's work. Zenga made six changes from the side that so memorably beat Blues 3-1 on Saturday.

In came Helder Costa and Prince Oniangue for their full debuts, while George Saville and captain Conor Coady filled the full-back roles and James Henry was given a chance to impress on the right.  Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was on the bench, but fellow new loanee Ola John wasn't included in the squad. It was definitely t-shirt weather at a warm Molineux and Wolves, as they had done against Crawley, started on the front foot. Jack Price linked well with Joao Teixeira before the lanky Oniangue won a free kick a yard outside the Cambridge box - Price stepped up but hit the wall. After just six minutes they took the lead. More nice interplay ended with Jed Wallace crossing low from the left and Costa couldn't miss from six yards. It was the second goal in a row assisted by Wallace, who has impressed so far this season. Cambridge may be bottom of League Two but they weren't detered by the early goal and produced a warning sign almost immediately, with captain Luke Berry's goalbound 12-yard shot brilliantly saved by Lonergan. Then on 13 minutes Wolves doubled their lead - as the men who combined for the first goal did so again. This time Costa returned the favour, crossing from the right to Wallace who turned home from close range. It had been a whirlwind start at Molineux - and the goals kept on coming. Wolves have looked suspect defensively in the opening stages but this took the biscuit. Dominic Iorfa and Kortney Hause got in each other's way, Iorfa headed it almost vertically and there was Medy Eliot to slam home from 12 yards. The goalmouth action continued apace and Lonergan had to smartly save from Ben Williamson's effort. Back came Wolves and it should have been 3-1 - Price played to Costa, he span and released Wallace who was through on goal, but his effort was too close to keeper Will Norris. Berry went inches wide with a diving header and Teixeira produced a decent effort from a tight angle, but the rest of the half petered out with Wolves struggling to play out from the back and with no focal point up front in the absence of a recognised striker. Price and Wallace had impressed, but Iorfa and Hause didn't look comfortable as a pairing, and neither did the out-of-position Saville. Wolves came out on the attack at the start of the second half - and should have been out of sight within 10 minutes. First the lively Costa hared into the box and drove a decent effort past the far post. And then the pace of the impressive Portuguese loanee won Wolves a spot kick - he was through on goal and bundled over by Blair Adams, who was correctly booked. James Henry stepped up to take the spot kick - but keeper Norris guessed correctly and saved the tame effort, meaning Wolves had missed penalties in successive home games. Matt Doherty and David Edwards replaced Teixeira and Oniangue 9 who has struggled to impose himself in midfield - as Zenga reverted to 4-3-3. Whenever Cambridge attacked Wolves failed to look comfortable, and so it was when they couldn't clear their lines and the ball fell to Mingoia who lashed a volley wide when he should have scored.  Costa, who picked up a knock when winning the penalty, was replaced by Bodvarsson with 20 minutes to go. The popular Icelandic striker added a focal point to Wolves' attack and had the South Bank on their feet with some nice turns and bursts of pace around the Cambridge box.

Wallace could have added a late third but prodded at his shot. And there were a couple of half scares at the other end. But Wolves saw it through.

Wolves could give debuts to new loan signings Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Ola John in Tuesday's EFL Cup second round tie against Cambridge United.  Fellow summer signings Helder Costa and Prince Oniangue may also make their first starts for the Championship club.  Cambridge slipped to the bottom of League Two after drawing 2-2 at  with Carlisle on Saturday.  This is the first meeting of the clubs since Wolves ran out 2-1 winners in a third round FA Cup tie in 2008.

Tim Spiers: Walter Zenga said this week that his team, owing to new transfers, a new boss, a new approach and just about a new everything else, are playing catch-up, writes Wolves correspondent Tim Spiers at St Andrew's.  Well eight points from four games and a scintillating derby comeback here aren't a bad start for a team just warming up. It was a feisty, blood and thunder clash in the Second City, as you'd expect, and Wolves were good value for the three points. They spurned several chances in the first half and were unjustly behind at the break. But a stirring second half comeback - full of the passion, the desire and the spirit that Zenga has so quickly instilled in this team - gave them an utterly convincing derby day victory .  More at http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2016/08/20/birmingham-x-wolves-x-report/

Beeb: Wolves came from behind to beat rivals Birmingham City and end the hosts' unbeaten start in the Championship.  Both sides had first-half chances but Blues led at the break when Che Adams turned in Stephen Gleeson's cross.  Wolves equalised with Joe Mason's curling shot and Danny Batth put Wolves ahead after Matt Doherty was denied.  Blues substitute Jack Storer was sent off for a headbutt on Kortney Hause before Iceland international Jon Dadi Bodvarsson fired in Wolves' third.  While Gary Rowett's side slipped to a first league defeat of 2016-17, Wolves are yet to lose a competitive game since Walter Zenga took charge on the eve of the campaign.  Former Sheffield United forward Adams marked his first  appearance for Birmingham with his first goal for the club, which came shortly after Wolves had lost midfielder Lee Evans to injury.  But a revitalised Wanderers hit back immediately after the interval through Mason and then Bodvarsson, who missed a penalty in Tuesday's  draw with Ipswich, rounded off the visitors' display with an excellent shot past Birmingham keeper Tomasz Kuszczak in the closing stages.

Wolves continued their unbeaten start under Walter Zenga as they played out a goalless draw against Ipswich.  The hosts missed an early penalty when Adam Webster fouled Jon Dadi Bodvarsson who saw his spot-kick saved by Ipswich goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski. Ipswich had a goal ruled out when Daryl Murphy's header from a Christophe Berra cross was judged to be offside. Helder Costa almost sealed a late three points for Wolves with a long range volley, but Bialkowski dived to save.

The history books will show us that Wolves beat Reading 2-0 on August 13, 2016.  But what they won't convey is the enthusiasm, the vitality and the exuberant vigour with which the    players approached their task - and with which Wolves' excited supporters celebrated. (More on line)

PETER ABBOTT (LONDON WOLVES) in the E&S Fan Verdits

What's your verdict on the match? A very Happy Wanderer 'ere. Thoroughly enjoyable team performance and boy, did we unnerve Reading's rather strange back three setup.

How did we not manage to get more goals? So much activity around their box and tremendous positivity, couldn't believe Al Habsi's two world class saves and then what a belter from Matt Doherty, he seriously battered that one.

Loving our approach play, final pass not quite bringing the rewards our play deserved.

Joe Mason played brilliantly and so pleased he scored the second, whilst all action Bodvarsson again showed how big and strong he's going to be for us this season.

Plus, I must give credit to our defending particularly early second half when Reading swarmed forward after their substitutions.

Really pleased that Danny Batth stood out especially as he was on the opposite side of the box to normal.

And have we converted Conor Coady to an attacking full back?

Who played well - and who didn't impress? Man of the match - no doubt whatsoever - goes to the whole team jointly.

And, finally, sheer comedy "Walter, Walter, give us a wave"...who on the bench told him that he needed to react?!

Walter Zenga's Wolves made it three games unbeaten this season as they comfortably sealed all three points against Reading at Molineux.  Wolves almost took an early lead when Joao Teixeira teed up Joe Mason but he was denied by Ali Al Habsi's save. Matt Doherty put the hosts ahead before the break when he hammered a fierce shot in from 12 yards out.

Mason headed home from a George Saville corner to double Wolves' lead as Reading failed to make an impact. The result means the hosts move up to fifth in the table and are unbeaten in their opening three games of the season after their 2-2 draw against Rotherham in the league and their 2-1 win against Crawley in the EFL Cup. Meanwhile, Reading slip seven places to 15th thanks to the defeat as they struggled to counter Wolves' attacking threat, recording just one shot on target in the whole match. Mason, who joined Wolves from Cardiff City in January, scored his second goal in his last five competitive games for the club as they dominated much of the game. Victory for Wolves means they have won their last two games against Reading, having lost four and drawn three in their last seven games beforehand.

Wolves will have Dominic Iorfa back for the visit of Reading after he served a one-match suspension in their midweek EFL Cup win against Crawley.  Iorfa was sent off for a pull back on Jon Taylor in Wolves' 2-2 draw against Rotherham United on Saturday. Reading have no injury concerns and could make it three wins in seven days after victory against Preston in the league and Plymouth in the EFL Cup. Yakou Meite could make his first Royals start after joining from PSG.

Analysis

BBC WM's Mike Taylor: "Early impressions are that Wolves supporters are starting to take to Walter Zenga, but sterner tests than Rotherham and Crawley are ahead.  "In both games so far, Wolves have been well below the required standard in the first half, but Zenga has been quick to make both formation changes and s which have had the desired  effect.  Some of the new signings are making a good impression too, with the Icelander Jon Dadi Bodvarsson scoring on his first appearance - how Kenny Jackett could have used him last season - and Joao Teixeira clearly showing touches of class. He may need to brace himself for a bit of rough treatment.  Social media continues to be gripped by the epic 'signing' of Anderson Talisca from Benfica, for a vertigo-inducing fee. At the time of writing, there is no hard evidence of his impending arrival.  Sooner or later, though, everyone is expecting Wolves to lay out big money on somebody, whether it is him, Chris Martin at Derby, or any one of countless others to be 'linked'. Time will tell."

Match facts

Wolves have lost three of their last four  league meetings with Reading but won the most recent meeting clash on Boxing Day last season.  That 1-0 win for Wolves last season is Reading's only defeat to them in their last eight league encounters (W4 D3).  Dominic Iorfa received the first red card of his career in Wolves' first game at Rotherham, making him the first Championship player to be sent off this season.

EFL round 1 9/8/16 Wolves 2  Mason (7' ), Coady (76') Crawley Town Boldewijn (13'), Connolly (Dismissed at  89')

Wolves squeezed past League Two Crawley to reach round two of the EFL Cup.  Championship side Wolves went in front through Joe Mason, who turned in a rebound after Jed Wallace hit the post. But Enzio Boldewijn, who had earlier seen an effort blocked on the line by Conor Coady, headed the equaliser for visitors Crawley from a corner. Coady touched in Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's knock-down to secure victory, while Crawley's Mark Connolly was sent off for a second bookable offence late on. You get the impression that no matter how many millions Fosun spend they'll never eradicate the annual tradition that is Wolves struggling against a lower-league team in the League Cup.  The likes of Northampton and Morecambe have dumped Wolves out of this competition in recent years, and for a while it looked like Crawley would add their names to that list. For long periods Wolves, despite taking an early lead through Joe Mason, struggled to get out of first gear, with a sluggish back line not helping their cause.  Crawley had hit back on 14 minutes after Mason's goal - and in perfect symmetry the tie stayed level until 14 minutes from time when, buoyed by the presence of a trio of new signings, Wolves eventually overpowered the League Two side, with Conor Coady's first goal for the club proving the winner. It was very much a case of job done, with a potential banana skin avoided, but the struggle was yet more evidence of the pressing need to strengthen Walter Zenga's squad, The boss, making his Molineux bow, made five changes from the team that drew with Rotherham.  Out went Carl Ikeme, David Edwards, George Saville, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and the suspended Dominic Iorfa, with Andy Lonergan, right back Conor Coady, Jack Price, Joe Mason and full debutant Joao Teixeira brought in. Wolves started on the front foot, with Mason fouled just outside the penalty area and Teixeira curling the resulting 20-yard free kick over the bar. Then just seven minutes in they took the lead - but not after a huge scare at the other end. Crawley won a corner, from which Enzio Boldewijn headed goalwards only for Coady to clear off the line. Wolves immediately broke at pace through Jed Wallace who advanced into the box and hit the post with his shot - and there was Mason to tap home the rebound. It was the perfect start to Zenga's first game at Molineux - but just seven minutes later they shot themselves in the foot. As at Rotherham on Saturday they conceded a near post header from a corner, with Boldewijn the man to flick past Lonergan. Wolves were being edgy and hesitant at the back, making several mistakes, and Lonergan was lucky to see his scuffed clearance land to a team mate. Going forward Wallace and the lively Teixeira were the best outlets, with the former sending a great cross towards Mason who headed over.

Portuguese midfielder Teixeira was a willing runner in midfield - and looking sharp in possession, constantly looking to advance up the pitch either with a give-and-go or a burst of pace. He then went close to putting Wolves in front with a 20-yard beauty which curled just wide. But Wolves' frailties at the back continued. Adi Yussuf ran into a chunk of space between centre halves Batth and Hause and it was left to Lonergan to push his low shot wide. Zenga called for reinforcement at the break, sending on new signings Costa and Bodvarsson. As at Rotherham, Henry and Wallace were both substituted as Zenga went 4-4-2, a decision that was particularly harsh on Wallace. Now attacking the South Bank - who took little time in starting the 'Icelandic clap' after Bodvarsson's arrival - Wolves had a spring in their step and Teixeira's half volley deflected wide for a corner, from which Batth's menacing header was blocked. But back came Crawley, with a nervous Hause clearance bouncing not too far wide of his own post before Jimmy Smith fired over from a decent position. With 25 minutes to go the outcome was too close to call, with the League Two side giving as good as they were getting. Wolves new trio of signings were all heavily involved. Costa dazzled with a couple of stepover-heavy runs, and then Teixeira whipped a cross towards Bodvarsson who headed over. James Collins then scuffed a shot across the face of goal, with Yussuf only just short of reaching it for a tap in, as Wolves played with fire yet again. But then, inspired by the set pieces of Jack Price, they finally edged back in front with 14 minutes left on the clock. A minute before the goal Price's outswinging free kick was met by Batth whose header was stunningly cleared off the line by a reflex Connolly header under his own bar. But Wolves were not to be denied when another Price set piece, this time an inswinging free kick from the left, was headed across goal by Bodvarsson, where Hause flicked on and then Coady stabbed home for his first ever Wolves goal, celebrated wildly with all his team mates in front of the South Bank. In the final knockings Wolves were largely untroubled, with plucky Crawley running out of steam. Wolves should have made the scoreline flattering on themselves, but Mason found the inside of the post with a free shot from 15 yards, with the ball bouncing across the goalline and to safety. Crawley never threatened again. And their cause was effectively ended when former Wolves youngster Connolly saw red for a second yellow card late on. Stoppage time passed by without further incident as Zenga celebrated his first win as Wolves boss.

Wolves may be without full-back Dominic Iorfa as they deliberate over whether to appeal against his red card for pulling back Jon Taylor in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Rotherham. They are also still without Silvio, who looks likely to be sidelined for three weeks with a leg injury, but another new signing Helder Costa may feature.

Crawley also went down to 10 men on Saturday as they won against Wycombe. Andre Blackman is now suspended after being sent off for two yellow cards.

New Wolves boss Walter Zenga will be taking charge of a game at Molineux for the first time.

New Wolves boss Walter Zenga saw his side fight back from 2-0 down to start the Championship season with a draw at Rotherham United.  Danny Ward headed the hosts in front from a corner before Will Vaulks made it 2-0 with a stunning 20-yard strike.  George Saville rounded home keeper Lee Camp to pull one back before Wolves defender Dominic Iorfa was sent off for pulling back Jon Taylor.  But Iceland striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson fired in to earn Wolves a point.  Bodvarsson, making his debut after signing from German side Kaiserslautern this week, was set up by fellow new-boy Joao Teixeira to put a dampener on Alan Stubbs' first game in charge of the Millers.  Stubbs, who left Hibernian to join Rotherham in the summer, handed starts to four of his summer signings - including record-signing Taylor - although it was Vaulks who made an immediate impact with a sweetly-struck half-volley that gave his side a deserved two-goal lead. Although Saville pulled one back, Rotherham looked increasingly in charge when Iorfa was ruled to be the last man as Taylor tried to run in on goal.  But Wolves improved following the introduction of on-loan Benfica midfielder Teixeira and ultimately deserved their point in former Italy goalkeeper Zenga's first game since replacing Kenny Jackett last weekend.

Wolves are the 16th side that Walter Zenga has managed in 18 years, starting with New England Revolution in 1998

New Wolves boss Walter Zenga takes charge for the first time against a Rotherham United side also under new management in Alan Stubbs.  After the arrival of record signing Jon Taylor, Stubbs has six of their seven purchases set for a debut, except Kelvin Wilson, who is not match fit.

Wolves have made four new signings - Helder Costa, Silvio, Joao Teixeira and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.  But they may not all be match fit enough to play at the New York Stadium.  Wolves remain without their four long-term injured players, Michal Zyro, Jordan Graham, Nouha Dicko, who are all recovering from knee operations, and Mike Williamson (hamstring).  Williamson could be closest to a return, while Dicko will miss the first few weeks of the season after having minor surgery to remove a staple from his knee.

Analysis

BBC Radio Sheffield's Jonathan Buchan:  "Rotherham head into the new season under their fourth boss in the last 12 months following the appointment of Alan Stubbs over the summer.  Last season's miraculous survival story was orchestrated by Neil Warnock, but some of the key men in that run, such as Matt Derbyshire have now moved on.  They are in desperate need of a striker before the transfer window closes but have made key midfield additions, with Celtic's Scott Allan having come on loan and the club record signing of Peterborough winger Jon Taylor."

BBC WM's Mike Taylor:

"After two weeks of what feels like unreality - or perhaps adjusting to a new reality - for Wolves and their supporters, comes a first taste for the newcomers of what they have let themselves in for.  All you can say with confidence about Wolves so far is that it was plain that they needed additions to the squad, and several have arrived - although there will surely be quite a few more yet.  But, in a way, this is the start of an experiment. In the early moments of their revolution, the new Wolves owners are turning against much of the received Championship wisdom, about coaches experienced in England and battle-hardened players. We'll find out eventually if it will work, but Saturday night will be too early to draw any firm conclusions."

Match facts

Since winning the first-ever league meeting between these sides in September 1965, Rotherham have won just once in 19 matches against Wolves, a 1-0 victory in August 2014.   Wolves have scored at least twice in nine of their last 14 league meetings with Rotherham, failing to score in the other five. Since being promoted out of the fourth tier in 2013, Rotherham have failed to win each of their last three opening day fixtures. Wolves have taken 13 of a possible 18 points from their last six opening-day fixtures, winning two of those as a Premier League side.  The Millers' final-day 1-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers in May was their first in eight home league games.
