Final Table

Wolves ended the season with three points as they beat Preston 1-0 at Molineux By Tim Spiers  Captain Danny Batth netting the winning goal as early as the first minute when he nodded home Jordan Graham's corner.  The winger made his first start since January 2016 and enjoyed an impressive comeback in what was a comfortable Wolves victory.

Bright Enobakhare hit the post and spurned another great chance but Paul Lambert's team had to settle for 1-0 as they ended the season in 15th.  It took them a while – 23 games in fact – but Wolves finally, belatedly managed to produce a convincing 90-minute performance and victory at home. It wasn't exactly a buccaneering, carefree thrashing of the Lillywhites. But Wolves generally in control, with minimal fuss, writes Tim Spiers at Molineux. They played some nice football, created a number of chances and kept the mistakes to a minimum. Which begs the question...where has this kind of performance been all season at home.  True, the game mattered little and Preston gave a power-puff performance. However, after some truly awful afternoons at Molineux in 2016/17 it was a reward for Wolves' long-suffering supporters to enjoy 90 minutes in the Wolverhampton sunshine.  Lambert made five changes from the team that lost 3-1 at Derby.  In came Graham, Batth, Silvio, Andreas Weimann and Bright Enobakhare who made his first start since February 14.  Mike Williamson, Ben Marshall and the suspended Ivan Cavaleiro dropped out of the squad altogether, while George Saville and Lee Evans were on the bench.  With both teams having nothing to play for it came of little surprise to anyone that the first half was a pedestrian, sedate affair played out in the Molineux sunshine.  There was very little goalmouth action to speak of, but Wolves did quietly impress with some decent football on the floor, with their passing a marked improvement on recent weeks.  The best example of this was when Preston's forwards were snapping away as Wolves played it around in their own third, but they refused to hoof it forward and despite a couple of hairy moments 10 passes later they were into midfield and away.  The star of the half was undoubtedly Graham, who looked back to his old self at times, teasing his marker and effortlessly sauntering inside and out before delivering a cross that was usually on the money. He was certainly on target with his early corner just 60 seconds in which found Batth's head for the opening goal.  It made you wonder where Wolves may have been with a fit and firing Graham on the left wing and Helder Costa the right this season. Graham provided eight assists in his 12 appearances last season and with service to the strikers a huge problem for Wolves his presence would likely have made a big difference.  Silvio, too, was impressing behind Graham and linking well with the winger. With both players being two-footed they were hard to contain. Indeed, Preston right back Tyias Browning was given the hook after just 52 minutes.  At this juncture Wolves had moved up a couple of gears and were in control of the game. They should have doubled their lead when Enobakhare somehow hit the post from 12 yards when it looked easier to score.  Then Dicko prodded at the keeper when clear in the box, Graham curled one over, as did Enobakhare, while Silvio hammered a 25-yard rocket just past the post.  Enobakhare was getting in some great positions but, as has been the case this season, his end product just wasn't quite there. He missed a glorious chance to score his first ever league goal for Wolves when through on goal...but overdid it before shooting straight at the keeper.  He stood head in hands, looking distraught, before Lambert made a point of telling him to keep his chin up, then put a encouraging arm around the shoulder when the youngster came to the touchline for a drink.   Thereafter the pace slowed again. The crowd kept themselves entertained, Graham got a great ovation when he departed, Dicko got a couple of shots away in what was another showing of the Dicko of old, as at Derby last week...and that was it.

Now the real work begins.

First Half begins.

Wolves will be without suspended winger Ivan Cavaleiro for the final game of the season against Preston. The winger starts a three-match ban for his red card following an off-the-ball incident in the 3-1 defeat at Derby.  Ben Pearson and Paul Gallagher are available for Preston after suspension. But manager Simon Grayson is still without Tom Clarke (Achilles), Greg Cunningham (broken leg) and John Welsh (calf), while Calum Woods (knee) goes the entire season without featuring. North End, in 11th, are winless in five, although a point would be enough to guarantee them a top-half finish.  Paul Lambert's Wolves, in 15th, could drop four places if they lose at   for a 12th time this season and results elsewhere go against them.

Match facts

Wolves have only failed to score in one of their last 22   league games against Preston - a 1-0 defeat in December 2000. Preston have alternated between a win and a defeat in their last five league visits. They won 2-1 at Molineux in 2015-16. Jermaine Beckford has had a hand in five goals in his last four league games against Wolves.  Wolves have won seven of their last eight final-day league matches at  , winning each of the last three. Wolves have lost 11   league games this season. They have only lost more twice in their entire history (12 in 1984-85 and 13 in 2011-12). 45  Sat   29th  April       15:00   Derby County  3 Nugent (12'), Johnson (29'), Bryson (57'   Wolves 1 Marshall (45'+1)

HT 2-1 Cavaleiro (Dismissed at  33')

Cav does a Fellaini

Derby County ended a run of three games without a win with a comfortable victory over 10-man Wolves.  David Nugent opened the scoring with a header from Tom Ince's cross before Bradley Johnson smashed in a second.  Wolves winger Ivan Cavaleiro was sent off for an off-the-ball incident, but Ben Marshall fired into the roof of the net to make it 2-1 at half-time.  But Craig Bryson put in Jonny Russell's cut-back to secure the points and move Gary Rowett's side up to ninth place.  Derby had gone three weeks without a win, but started the brighter side and took the lead after 12 minutes when Nugent planted a header beyond goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne.  Johnson doubled the Rams' lead midway through the second half when he ran onto Russell's whipped cross and found the net with a powerful finish. Russell nearly got on the score sheet himself when a loose ball fell to him from a corner, but his attempt was cleared off the line.  Wolves' task was then made much harder when Cavaleiro was shown a straight red card by referee Chris Kavanagh. Marshall beat Scott Carson from Nouha Dicko's pass to give them hope on the stroke of half-time, but Bryson benefitted from another Russell run and cross to put the game beyond the  side, who stay 15th after a third game without a win.

Tim Spiers saw it like this

In one of the most one-sided halves in a Wolves game this season, Derby scored twice through David Nugent and Bradley Johnson and also hit the bar twice and had a shot cleared off the line.  Wolves were somehow only 2-1 down at the break though with Ben Marshall scoring his second goal for the club just before the interval. Ivan Cavaleiro had already been sent off at this point for a headbutt off the ball, which drew few complaints from him or Paul Lambert. Derby exerted their authority after the break when Craig Bryson made it 3-1 and Wolves couldn't offer anything in response as the game petered out.

Analysis

Don't worry everyone, there's only one game left.  Wolves arrived at Pride Park for their annual beating, which was every bit as chastising as the last two (4-2 last season and 5-0 the year before), despite the fact there was nothing riding on it writes Tim Spiers at Pride Park.

There were few positives to take from this, other than the fact Wolves avoided a proper hiding. Derby were so dominant in the first half they should have been out of sight. The fact Paul Lambert's team kept the score to 3-1 despite playing an hour with 10 men was an achievement.   But the manner in which the Rams tore through Wolves' midfield and defence in a one-way opening period was deeply concerning, meaningless end-of-season game or not. The end of an underwhelming season cannot come soon enough. Since winning five on the bounce Wolves' form has again turned on its head with four defeats in six. Motivation is clearly an issue, which is a surprise seen as so many of these players should be fighting for their futures. But only Nouha Dicko and David Edwards emerged from this with any real credit. Again, you feel Lambert will have learned an awful lot about his players here. The head coach made eight changes from the team that lost 1-0 at Huddersfield Town on Tuesday - the most he's made for a league game this season. Only Harry Burgoyne, David Edwards and Ben Marshall kept their places. There was a new-look back four which included Mike Williamson, who replaced skipper Danny Batth, while Ivan Cavaleiro and Romain Saiss were among the players restored to the XI. Scotland Under-21 international Jack Ruddy, who moved from Bury last summer, was named in a Wolves squad for the first time, while Bright Enobakhare was also on the bench after a long absence from first-team action. Wolves have generally been impressive on the road under Lambert, winning eight of 16 matches, but they saved their worst half of the season away from home for their final away fixture. Derby should have been 5-0 up at half time, but somehow Wolves escaped with just a 2-1 deficit. The rampant Rams overpowered sheepish Wolves from the outset, with Tom Ince getting plenty of joy down the right against George Saville. Ince tested Burgoyne early on with a curling shot which was saved but not cleared and then Bradley Johnson smashed one against the bar - with it bouncing just in front of the line. Ince then got in one-on-one behind Saville but the makeshift left-back got a crucial toe on the ball to deny him at the last. Just 12 minutes in Derby took a deserved lead when that man Ince curled the ball to the back stick where David Nugent headed home. Wolves were struggling for air and Johnny Russell should have made it 2-0 after taking Ince's pass but fired wide. Not long after Derby doubled their lead. Russell raced past Conor Coady and sent a low ball inside where Johnson had ghosted in unmarked and drilled past Burgoyne. It was a torturous half for the 3,000 away fans who kept on singing regardless. Wolves were at sixes and sevens at the back and couldn't string any passes together in midfield.   Things went from bad to worse when Cavaleiro saw red for an alleged headbutt.  Wolves were rudderless and carnage looked like ensuing. Edwards had to clear a shot off the line after Burgoyne flapped at a corner. And then Russell turned the ball onto the crossbar as Wolves struggled to cope.  But from nowhere, just before half time, they somehow got back in the game. Dicko, who amid the madness was giving his best performance of the season with excellent hold up play, sharp passes and a couple of shots that whistled wide, got to the byline and crossed for Ben Marshall who slapped the ball home from 15 yards for an unlikely lifeline.  However it was a temporary smokescreen for what was to come as Derby eased to victory in the second half. Wolves sat deep trying to contain the Rams in a 4-4-1 formation with Edwards on the right and Marshall the left, but it was passing practice for the hosts who simply had to use a bit of invention to make it 3-1 when an unmarked Craig Bryson fired into the corner. Thereafter the game petered out. Wolves enjoyed a spell of possession and Bright Enobakhare looked lively from the bench, but neither goalkeeper was seriously tested again as the Wolves fans sang their hearts out despite the scoreline.

6 changes then Lonergan pulls out of warm-up - Harry Burgoyne in goal

Former Albion youngster Isaiah Brown scored the only goal of the game when his 20-yard effort beat Harry Burgoyne, who had replaced the injured Andy Lonergan minutes before kick off.  The returning Joe Mason was sent on at half time and Graham played for the last half hour - getting a rapturous ovation as he took to the field. But Wolves lacked inspiration and, aside from a David Edwards shot that hit the post, never looked like equalising. Tim Spiers Analysis It was a night of comebacks at Molineux...except for the one that mattered most of all. Jordan Graham, Joe Mason, Silvio and Harry Burgoyne made their first appearances for 15, three, six and three months respectively, while Dominic  Iorfa and Jack Price came in after six-week absences.   But Wolves couldn't manage a comeback in terms of the scoreline as Huddersfield saw it out fairly comfortably, writes Tim Spiers at Molineux. Their margin of victory should have been greater - and it would have been had substitute Collin Quaner not spurned three good chances. At a chilly Molineux it felt like February - and the game was reminiscent of the consecutive defeats Wolves suffered in that month which dragged them into a relegation dogfight. The fact they've avoided the drop with a few games to spare is fooling no one as to their improved chances next season with the current squad. Indeed, this was indicative of so many performances this season - no lack of industry or effort, but a glaring lack of quality and creativity, or a clinical touch when it mattered. This season is petering out rapidly. Like last season, the goals and excitement have dried up, with just four witnessed in the last four home games. Wolves have been a good away outfit since Lambert took over (they're sixth in the away table) but a dreadful home record simply has to be addressed with a new way of playing if Wolves are to do anything of note next year. Goals have been a problem all season long (this was Jon Dadi Bodvarsson's 24th appearance without a goal at Molineux, for example) and a clinical striker must be top of the wish-list this summer. They'll need plenty more than that on this offering, though. Lambert pledged to freshen up his XI, but surely no one was expecting the raft of six changes (the most he'd made for consecutive league games as Wolves boss), particularly the personnel who came in. Silvio, Dominic Iorfa and Jack Price came in from the cold, while Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and captain Danny Batth were recalled and Morgan Gibbs-White was handed his debut first-team start at Molineux. Conor Coady, George Saville and Nouha Dicko dropped to the bench, while Ivan Cavaleiro, Romain Saiss and the injured Matt Doherty dropped out altogether. And then Wolves were forced into another change in the warm-up when Andy Lonergan picked up an injury. In came Burgoyne, with Northern Irish teenager Rory Brown promoted to the bench. There was a familiar face in the Huddersfield side in the form of Rajiv Van La Parra, who was making his first Molineux appearance since leaving under a cloud last March following some ill-advised social media comments. He was duly booed from the outset - and predictably had a good first half against the struggling Iorfa. The right-back was by no means the only player to endure a below par half, though, in what was a depressingly insipid performance. Wolves at least had an early shot on target - in the 10th minute as opposed to the 94th on Saturday - when Edwards headed Iorfa's cross goalwards. The same player also tested keeper Danny Ward when he flicked on a Marshall free kick, in Wolves' only other chance of the half. But by that point they were already 1-0 down and Edwards played his part in that too, giving the ball away in midfield from where Huddersfield dashed forward and Isaiah Brown beat Burgoyne - who will have been disappointed he didn't save it - from 20-odd yards. Wolves tried to raise the tempo with some one-touch stuff at times, but in general the spectacle was every bit as dull as the Blackburn draw, only Huddersfield possessed far more quality than Rovers. Nahki Wells twice went close, with the Terriers overrunning Wolves' midfield. Silvio was tentative, Jack Price lacked fluency, Weimann and Marshall created nothing and Bodvarsson was left isolated as Wolves struggled to appease their frustrated supporters on a cold April evening. Mason replaced Bodvarsson (the second time in four days Wolves' central striker had been hauled off at half time) for the second half. No doubt after a rollocking from Lambert, Wolves were much improved. Things like purpose, pace, tempo and urgency, which had seemed against the law for the previous 135 minutes of Molineux football, were back in fashion. Mason flashed a shot just wide, Edwards hit a post on the turn from close range and Gibbs-White began to grow in confidence on the right wing, as did Silvio on the opposite flank. Graham's introduction lifted the crowd and Wolves continued to have more of the play, albeit substitute Collin Quaner should have scored with a 10-yard shot that flashed wide. The same player was wasteful again with 10 minutes left after a sumptuous through ball from Wells. It should have been game over by now but Wolves just couldn't take advantage of their reprieve, with many fans having left the ground by the time the referee put the rest out of their misery.

Wolves 0-1 Huddersfield BBC

FT 21:36 Huddersfield Town are in the Championship play-offs for the first time in their history. Izzy Brown's first half goal was enough for them to get the job done tonight. The Terriers are up to third with that win. SUB, 21:33 Huddersfield make their last change of the night, midfielder Phillip Billing comes on for striker Nahki Wells.  21:32 Into three minutes of stoppage time at Molineux. 21:30 Huddersfield break but Collin Quaner dallies and his shot is blocked. The sub has had three chances since he came on and, had he taken just one, Town fans would be breathing a lot easier right now. 21:26 Wolves make their final change of the night as Nouha Dicko comes on for Silvio. Dicko scored the winner in their recent 1-0 win at Leeds.

21:25 Wolves have enjoyed the lion's share of possession this half but aside from Dave Edwards's effort that hit the post they've never really worried Town keeper Danny Ward. It'll be two goals in five games if they fail to score in the last five minutes. 21:21 Huddersfield striker Nahki Wells plays in strike partner Collin Quaner but the German can only shoot straight at Harry Burgoyne. For the second time in the last few minutes he should have done better. 21:20 Wolves win a corner but the Terriers clear their lines and goalkeeper Danny Ward claims the ball after it's sent back into the area,  21:18 Less than 15 minutes to go at Molineux. Can the hosts find a leveller or will Town confirm their place in the play-offs tonight? 21:13 SUB,  Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner makes his second change of the night. Goalscorer Izzy Brown makes way for Harry Bunn.

21:11 Huddersfield sub Collin Quaner fires wide from six yards after Aaron Mooy's free-kick eventually falls to his feet. The big German really should have hit the target. 21:04 SUB, Paul Lambert's side may still be trailing but Wolves boss Paul Lambert will be pleased with what he has seen this half from his charges. He makes his second change of the night, with Jordan Graham coming on for Morgan Gibbs-White. SUB, 20:59 Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner makes his first sub of the night with Collin Quaner coming on for Sean Scannell.  20:55 So close to a Wolves equaliser!  Danny Ward makes a good initial save from an Andi Weimann shot before Dave Edwards hits the post on the rebound.  20:53 Wolves sub Joe Mason finds a little bit of space but can't keep his effort on target.  A warning to the visitors. 20:50 Wolves midfielder Jack Price chances his arm from outside the area but it's wide. Very wide.  20:48 Wolves, who have brought on Joe Mason for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, get us back under way.

20:32 HALF-TIME Wolves 0-1 Huddersfield

20:30 Town winger Rajiv van la Parra wins a free-kick by the corner flag, much to the annoyance of the home fans. Aaron Mooy's delivery is headed clear. The Australian not having the best night with set pieces so far. 20:27 Huddersfield come close to a second but Wolves scramble the ball to safety. 20:23 If this game is to end 1-0 then that will mean Town boss David Wagner will have won all three of his games against Wolves by the same scoreline. For fans of this sort of thing, Wolves had had a different manager in each of these games. 20:19 The hosts nearly hit straight back but, for the second time tonight, Danny Ward saves from a Dave Edwards header. 20:18 Izzy Brown, who had seemed the man most likely to do something in this game, has done something. The Chelsea loanee's low finish goes beyond Harry Burgoyne's dive and into the corner. As it stands, Huddersfield are on their way to the play-offs. GOAL - Wolves 0-1 Huddersfield 20:13 Huddersfield winger Rajiv van la Parra is not getting a particularly welcome reception from the Wolves fans. The Dutchman had a largely unhappy spell at the Molineux before joining the Terriers in January 2016. 20:11 Huddersfield full-back Chris Lowe sends a decent ball into the box but centre-back Christopher Schindler heads over.  He perhaps should have done a little better. 20:08 Wolves goalkeeper Harry Burgoyne was only drafted into the starting XI after Andy Lonergan was injured in the warm-up. The 20-year-old makes his first save of the night from a Nahki Wells shot. Just past the 20-minute mark here and the closest either side have come to opening the scoring is this Dave Edwards header that Huddersfield keeper Danny Ward saved comfortably. 20:05  Huddersfield win a couple of corners in quick succession but can not force a shot on goal. 20:01 Huddersfield win an attacking free-kick after Rajiv van la Parra is fouled but Aaron Mooy's low delivery is easily dealt with by the hosts. 19:57 Izzy Brown plays in Huddersfield striker Nahki Wells but the Bermudan snatches at his chance and blasts it over the bar. 19:56 Huddersfield keeper Danny Ward makes a smart save at his near post from a Dave Edwards header. The Wales international has scored 10 goals this season. First corner of the day goes to Huddersfield but Wolves clear their lines. The hosts have failed to score in eight of their 21 home games this season by the way. 19:49 Quiet opening in the West Midlands.  The hosts have nothing left to play for and have scored just twice in their last four games... But do stick with us!

Tonight's game might see West Midlands meet West Yorkshire but the opposing managers owe more than a little to a team based in the Westfalen Stadium. Wolves boss Paul Lambert might only have spent one season with Borussia Dortmund but that was long enough to help the club to their sole Champions League success in 1997. The Scot clearly enamoured himself to the club, as he spent time back with them in March 2015 after his sacking by Aston Villa.  Meanwhile, Huddersfield head coach David Wagner spent four years coaching Dortmund's reserve team between 2011 and 2015 before following best friend Jurgen Klopp to England in November 2015.

There's been a late change to the Wolves line-up. An injury to goalkeeper Andy Lonergan means a fourth league start for 20-year-old Harry Burgoyne. Academy goalkeeper Rory Brown steps up to the bench.

There is never a good time to lose form but it's fair to say that some times are worse than others.  To that end, Huddersfield have chosen a particularly bad point of the season to go on a run of two wins in seven. However, victory tonight at Wolves will see them reach the Championship play-offs for the first time in their history.

Wolves forward Helder Costa (ankle) could return to the team after missing the last five games.  Defender Matt Doherty is doubtful after going off injured in the 0-0 draw with Blackburn on Saturday. Huddersfield could welcome back striker Elias Kachunga after he missed Saturday's defeat by Fulham through illness. Forward Izzy Brown (hamstring) is likely to feature from the bench again, as he did on Saturday.

Match facts

Wolves won this fixture last season, ending a run of eight home league games without a win against Huddersfield (D4 L4). Huddersfield have won nine of their last 11 league games against Wolves, losing the other two. David Wagner has won both of his previous Championship matches against Wolves, both by a 1-0 scoreline. Wolves have failed to score in eight home games this season - only Wigan (14) have failed more in the Championship this season. The Terriers are winless in their last three away league games, scoring just once and conceding seven (D1 L2).

Just in: American security services plan to make prisoners repeatedly watch that first half as a new form of excruciating torture.

Relegation-threatened Blackburn remain in the Championship's bottom three after a drab goalless draw at Wolves.  In a game of few chances, Rovers' Lucas Joao saw a late header land on the top of the crossbar, as the match finally opened up in the closing stages. Wolves' only shot on target came in stoppage time, as David Raya saved from Ivan Cavaleiro at the near post. Tony Mowbray's side remain 22nd, two points below 21st-placed Birmingham City, who have a game in hand.

First Half begins.

Forward Helder Costa remains sidelined with an ankle problem for the fifth consecutive game as Wolves face struggling Blackburn Rovers.  Andy Lonergan is likely to stay in goal in place of Carl Ikeme (hamstring).

Blackburn's battle against the drop is bolstered by having five players back.  Keeper Jason Steele and defenders Darragh Lenihan and Gordon Greer are back in training along with two former Wolves players, the versatile Charlie Mulgrew and striker Danny Graham.

Wolves secured their Championship status with their Easter Monday win at Leeds but 22nd-placed Blackburn are in trouble, a point behind Nottingham Forest, who entertain Reading, and three behind Birmingham City, who do not play until Sunday. Following Walter Zenga's sacking three days earlier, Wolves were still under the caretaker management of Rob Edwards when they drew 1-1 at Ewood Park in late October, with Paul Lambert appointed as head coach a week later.

Analysis Andy Bayes, BBC Radio Lancashire

Four points out of six over Easter have given Rovers more cause for optimism than perhaps they had before. A defeat this weekend, might not be the end for Rovers' survival hopes, but it's accepted by Tony Mowbray that they are reliant on other clubs to slip up.  The potential returns of Charlie Mulgrew, Darragh Lenihan and Danny Graham are enormous boosts, when it had looked like, particularly the defenders wouldn't play again this season.  With Birmingham not playing until Sunday, Rovers know a win will see them climb out of the bottom three, maybe for less than twenty-four hours. But, psychologically it could be huge for a squad who've spent so much of the season below the dotted line.

Match facts

Across the last eight Championship games, only table-topping Brighton (21) have won more points than Wolves (18). Wolves are unbeaten in their last seven league encounters with Blackburn.  Blackburn have lost only one of their last eight league meetings with Wolves at Molineux.  Paul Lambert, who managed Blackburn for 33 games between November 2015 and May 2016, has not beaten Rovers in three attempts as a manager.  Blackburn, who won 1-0 in their last   league game at Nottingham Forest, have not won two on the spin since December 2015.  Tony Mowbray's  s have won on two of his last three visits to Molineux - both with West Bromwich Albion, in the Championship play-off semi-final in May 2007 and again in a Championship fixture in April 2008. But he lost on his most recent visit in March 2013 when he was in charge of Middlesbrough.

Result kicks Leeds out of playoffs and Fulham replace them

Dicko latched onto Ben Marshall's superb pass to beat Robert Green and put Wolves deservedly in front just before half time.  Leeds came on strong after the break but a brilliant defensive display ensured victory - and Blackburn's draw with Bristol City meant Wolves were mathematically safe.

Analysis You just can't predict anything this season can you?  Wolves have beaten Liverpool and Stoke City, blitzed an excellent Fulham team, won away at Newcastle and recently won five on the spin in 2016/17, writes Tim Spiers at Elland Road. They've also lost twice to Wigan, been brushed aside by Bristol City, defeated by Burton Albion and also endured a six-game losing streak. Everything pointed to a Leeds win here. Wolves spent their last two games on the beach and Leeds - winners in 14 of 21 home games this season - desperately required victory. But Wolves were deserved winners. They took the game to Leeds in the first half, created numerous chances and deservedly led at the break. Lambert's 4-4-2 game plan worked perfectly and, unlike on Friday or indeed last Saturday, nobody had an off day. They were on it, they were committed and they were disciplined. Leeds, as expected, lobbed the kitchen sink at them in the second half but they held firm, to the extent that Andy Lonergan was only seriously tested once, mostly thanks to a magnificent collective defensive performance, with the recalled Mike Williamson and Richard Stearman both outstanding. And it all meant, after some growing concerns of being sucked towards the bottom three in the last week, that safety was mathematically secured.  Lambert deserves plenty of credit. And it bodes well for next season that he certainly knows how to plan and enact a game plan away from home. That's been evident on a number of occasions in recent months.  The Wolves boss made four changes from the team that lost 2-0 to Brighton on Good Friday.  The injured Danny Batth and Ivan Cavaleiro missed out, while Kortney Hause and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson dropped to the bench. In came a new centre half pairing in Richard Stearman and Mike Williamson, plus George Saville and Nouha Dicko, with David Edwards skipper on his 300th appearance for the club.  Leeds went into the game needing the points to help their play-off prospects, while Wolves had looked on the beach for their last matches, both defeats. But the form book was turned on its head in the first half, which Wolves dominated in terms of chances.  In contrast to Friday's poor midfield showing against Brighton, Wolves were terrier-like and regularly won back possession in the Leeds half, with Marshall, Saiss, Edwards and Saville all playing well in a 4-4-2 formation.  The back four, again in contrast to Friday, were solid and dependable. Coady looked unbeatable down the Leeds left and did his fair share going forward, while Williamson, Stearman and Doherty all made important blocks and interception.  Indeed, it was one of the best halves of Wolves' infuriatingly inconsistent season and the 1-0 half time scoreline flattered the hosts. Weimann, who partnered Dicko up top but often drifted to the right, should have given them an early lead when played in by Saiss, but shot too close to the keeper in a spurned chance reminiscent of Dicko's at Bristol City.  Then, Wolves soon folded, but here they grew more determined with Edwards, Saville and Dicko all getting decent opportunities, before Dicko broke the deadlock when smartly beating Green from a wonderful Marshall through ball.  There were moments for Leeds at the other end, but a frustrated home crowd were given very little to cheer.  At half time, with Fulham and Sheffield Wednesday winning, Leeds were being dumped out of the top six and it was no surprise they started to lay siege to Lonergan's goal after a half-time rollocking from Garry Monk, no doubt.  The keeper was fortunate when his clearance was charged down by Chris Wood but deflected to safety, and then Leeds had a huge penalty appeal turned down when Stearman was claimed to have handled Wood's cross. Jansson headed a corner over the bar as Wolves struggled to cope.  Lambert reacted with a double change on 68 minutes, sending on Bodvarsson and Lee Evans for Saville and goalscorer Dicko. And there was then a period respite for Wolves who began to get hold of the ball in midfield and won a couple of corners.  But back came Leeds - Doukara's header was brilliantly tipped over by Lonergan in his first real save of the afternoon.  It was his first save as the magnificent Williamson and Stearman had repelled almost everything being thrown into the Wolves blocks with a succession of sliding clearances, headers and interceptions.    That continued in the dying minutes. Kortney Hause was added to the fray and did more than his fair share, with Leeds chucking the ball in the box but Wolves holding firm to pull of an unexpected and very welcome victory.

First Half begins.

Leeds manager Garry Monk could tweak his side after Friday's 1-1 draw with Newcastle, with midfielder Ronaldo Vieira returning from illness.  Charlie Taylor, who made an impact as a substitute at Newcastle, will compete with Gaetano Berardi for a start.

Helder Costa (ankle) faces a late fitness test for Wolves, while Andy Lonergan will continue in goal for Carl Ikeme, who has a hamstring problem.  Joe Mason (hernia) and Connor Ronan (back) remain injured and unavailable.

Match facts

Leeds have won their last three league encounters with Wolves, each by a single goal margin.  Wolves have left with all three points in two of their last four visits to Elland Road. They had won two of their previous 22 games there beforehand.  Leeds have won all three of their matches on a Monday this season - 4-1 at Preston and 3-0 against Rotherham in the Championship and 2-1 at Cambridge in the FA Cup.  Wolves have a similarly good record on Mondays, winning five of their last six league games played on this weekday (D1).  The Whites have only conceded two first half goals at Elland Road in the Championship this season - they haven't conceded a first half goal in any of their last 12  games since a Dwight Gayle strike for Newcastle in November.

42  Fri   14th  April         19:45  Wolves  0 Brighton 2 Knockaert (45', 82') HT 0-1  Sky

righton moved a step closer to Premier League promotion thanks to a double from Championship Player of the Year Anthony Knockaert against Wolves.  He gave the visitors a first-half lead with a fine low shot, though replays showed he was fortunate not to be flagged offside. Wolves were competitive throughout but lacked a cutting edge.  Knockaert made the points safe with his 15th of the season after Ivan Cavaleiro was caught in possession.

Tim Spiers writes

The Seagulls took the lead just before half time when Anthony Knockaert took advantage of two Wolves errors to fire them in front. Wolves improved after the hour mark and forged a couple of chances for Conor Coady and Ben Marshall. But the visitors made sure of the points eight minutes from time when they caught Wolves out on the break and Knockaert doubled the lead for a deserved away victory.

Analysis

"It’s a good barometer for where we’re at," said Paul Lambert ahead of the game.  Answer - there's an awful lot of work to do, writes Tim Spiers at Molineux.

Wolves and Lambert don't pretend to be near the finished product yet and they stayed in the game against the Championship's best side until the 82nd minute. But despite the possession and shots statistics being fairly similar, Brighton were a class above and very rarely in trouble here. There was no faulting Wolves' effort but they lacked the required quality - and the right decision-making - at both ends of the pitch, and more pertinently in midfield. Brighton are the template for Wolves to follow. Chris Hughton took over halfway through the 2014/15 season, guided them to safety, identified key players and added to them, leading to a third-placed finish last season and surely promotion this year. Lambert has talent and grafters at his disposal but there is plenty of dead wood to clear out and much-needed quality and goals to add. That won't be an easy task. But, in Fosun's cash and ambitions, he will have the tools at his disposal to achieve it. There'll be no excuses next season. Lambert made three changes from the team that lost 3-1 at Bristol City. In came Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, who ended his seven-month scoring drought at Ashton Gate, as well as Ivan Cavaleiro and Romain Saiss. Nouha Dicko, Morgan Gibbs-White and Lee Evans dropped to the bench where they were joined by in-form 20-year-old striker Donovan Wilson, selected as a reward for nine goals in 10 under-23 appearances. Wolves initially made a bright start, making the early running with Ben Marshall and Ivan Cavaleiro looking sharp and Saiss spraying it around with class and purpose in midfield. But no chances of note were created and the visitors soon began to make their extra quality count. A careless Saiss pass led to Brighton's first big chance - the ball was quickly worked to Tomer Hemed who crashed a shot off the bar with Lonergan beaten. Then a free Hemed header looped just over and Solly March was allowed too much room to fire into the side netting from 18 yards. Wolves were beginning to look laboured, regularly giving the ball away and barely seeing the ball in the Brighton third at what was now a quiet Molineux. The Seagulls didn't need an excuse to press forward - and just before half time they took a deserved lead. isappointingly though, it was two Wolves mistakes that led to the goal, with Hause horribly misjudging the bounce before Lonergan got a hand to, but couldn't keep out, Knockaert's shot. Wolves were sleepwalking. And in stoppage time it was almost 2-0 but a dreadful Coady header straight to Hemed wasn't punished. Lambert, perhaps surprisingly, didn't make any changes at half time and the status quo continued with Brighton in control of what was a pretty dull game.  A one-two saw former Albion man - and an ex-Wolves target - Sebastien Pocognioli get in behind and cross for dangerman Glenn Murray who flashed a shot wide.  A second Brighton goal looked on the cards with Wolves still passive and seriously lacking in inspiration.  But then, out of the blue, came a great chance to level. Cavaleiro was the man to provide that inspiration with a perfect cross to Coady but he couldn't beat keeper David Stockdale with a free header - the first save the Brighton keeper was forced to make.  With 20 minutes left Lambert still hadn't brought on a substitute and the home fans' frustration was growing. Again, from nowhere, came an opportunity when Bodvarsson brilliantly burst from midfield and slipped in Marshall, but his prodded shot was far too easy for Stockdale. Marshall was again involved when he worked space for a shot from 20 yards which drew a sprawling save from the keeper. This was much better from Wolves and Lambert added fresh legs with 14 minutes to go when Wilson and Dicko replaced Bodvarsson and Marshall.  But a late charge never materialised and it wasn't a huge surprise to see the visitors double their lead through the classy Knockaert.  The mercurial Frenchman has been superb in both games against Wolves in 2016/17. Wolves' equivalent, Helder Costa, was sorely missed...where would they have been without him this season?

Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is still struggling with a hamstring injury so Andy Lonergan is set to keep his place against Championship leaders Brighton. Helder Costa (ankle) has missed Wolves' past two games but may feature. Long-term absentees Connor Goldson and Shane Duffy are the only Brighton players unavailable for the Seagulls' trip to Molineux. Full-backs Gaetan Bong and Liam Rosenior will hope to feature after being rested for the win at QPR.

Match facts

After scoring in 14 consecutive league games against Brighton previously, Wolves have since scored just three goals across their last six against them.  Brighton have not won at Molineux in league competition since January 1991, having drawn five and lost two of their seven trips there since. Wolves are looking to win four  games in a row in the same season since winning their opening four games back in the 2014-15 campaign.  Despite this, Wolves still have the third worst record at  this season in the Championship (W7 D3 L9). Brighton are the second best  from  (W10 D5 L5).  Brighton have won five of their last six Championship games, losing the other to Leeds.  The Seagulls are just three points shy of their points total from the entirety of last season (89).

Bristol City moved four points clear of the Championship relegation zone by beating Wolves, whose five-match winning run was ended at Ashton Gate. Aden Flint headed against the bar for the hosts before Jamie Paterson curled in their opener from 18 yards. Tammy Abraham's coolly-taken penalty made it 2-0 after Matt Doherty had brought down Mark Little in the box. Abraham's second from close range sealed the win, with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson getting Wolves' consolation. Abraham's second from close range sealed the win, with Jon Dadi Bodvarsson getting Wolves' consolation.  The Iceland striker scored his first goal since 20 August, but came too late for Wanderers to mount a serious comeback.

A first ever league start for young Morgan Gibbs-White

Lineups are announced and players are warming up.

Bristol City remain without midfielder Gary O'Neil for Saturday's visit of in-form Wolves in the Championship.  O'Neil (leg) may be out for the season, but striker Milan Djuric could return next week for the Robins, who are one point above the relegation zone.  Wolves will check on top scorer Helder Costa, who pulled out of Tuesday's home game with Nottingham Forest after injuring his ankle in the warm-up.  His replacement Nouha Dicko came in to score the only goal in Wolves' 1-0 win.  Andy Lonergan will continue to deputise for injured goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

The hosts start the day just a point clear of trouble, 10 points behind Wolves, who have leapt clear of the bottom three with five straight league victories, having failed to win any of the previous six.  Bristol City head coach Lee Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "Everything is in our hands. We have got four games to come. We all want that Championship status. It is not going to be easy but we have got to dig in and go to the wire. We can have discussions at the end of the season and lay everything out in the open. In the meantime, it is very important that we stay together."

Wolves head coach Paul Lambert told BBC WM: "We're climbing the table and have got a lot of points in a short space of time. The pressure is on Bristol City from where they are in the league and the beating they took on Tuesday night.  Maybe their crowd will come and, if they don't get off to great start, are going to criticise. We have to make sure we use that to put even more pressure on them.  If you're consistent in this league, you've got a chance of getting out. That's what we have to strive for, home and away. You have to get used to winning. That has to be the mindset."

Match facts

Bristol City have picked up just one win in their previous 15 games against Wolves - 1-0 in the corresponding fixture last season. Wolves have won six of their last seven league encounters with the Robins, losing the other. Defender Aden Flint has scored in each of his last two appearances against Wolves in league competition. After winning back-to-back games without conceding, Bristol City have let in seven in two games, losing both. Wolves last won six in succession in the second tier in November 2008, a run of seven matches during their Championship promotion season under Mick McCarthy.

Dicko was only in the line-up owing to Helder Costa suffering an injury in the warm-up, but he won it for Wolves when he turned home Andreas Weimann's cross.  Seconds earlier Conor Coady had cleared off the line and Wolves were also indebted to Andy Lonergan making a great save in injury time. But they saw it through to rise to 15th in the table.

Nouha Dicko wasn't even supposed to be playing tonight. The striker was named on the bench when the team sheets dropped at 6.45pm. An injury to Helder Costa in the warm-up changed that, an issue which seemed to have impacted on Wolves during what was a drab first hour of football, writes Tim Spiers at Molineux. But Costa's  misfortune was Dicko's gain - and how. After all the hype and expectation surrounding his long-awaited comeback, the Mali striker has endured some lean times this season. Lean is putting it mildly in terms of goals - he'd only netted once in 24 appearances. And so much of the frustration and anger that has built up over many months was unleashed when he scored what proved to be the winning goal here - and a fabulous one at that in a crazy minute of football when Forest should have scored at one end and Wolves did at another. This victory lacked the class and potency of the one against Fulham, or the relative calmness of the one against Cardiff. Indeed, Wolves were below par for much of the night. But win they did, for the fifth time in succession and the third time in a row at home. The last time they achieved the latter they were chasing the play-offs in 2015. They're miles off doing the same here, but the way Wolves are playing and winning right now, you wonder what could have happened had February not been as disastrous as it was. As it is they've almost certainly staved off relegation. They're 11 points clear of the bottom three with a game in hand. The planning for 2017/18 can begin in earnest. Lambert had named an unchanged team from the side that beat Cardiff 3-1 on Saturday, before Costa's absence meant a late start for Nouha Dicko. Jack Price was promoted to the bench. Andy Lonergan continued between the sticks with hamstring injury victim Carl Ikeme still sidelined, while former Wolves defender Michael Mancienne was in defence for the struggling visitors who arrived at Molineux having not won on the road since November. But for all Forest's struggles they controlled long periods of the first half, certainly in terms of possession, having 50 per cent of the ball. It was a generally a sluggish, slow and ponderous half from Lambert's team, who appeared to spend much of the half in a state of drowsiness, half a yard behind play and failing to break Forest's spell of possession. It was as if the Costa withdrawal had stunned them into submission. But, more likely, they were afflicted by complacency after a run of four straight wins and with a quiet home crowd probably expecting them to roll Forest over. Forest weren't good enough to take advantage, though, with a snap-shot from Britt Assombalonga the only time they tested Lonergan. Even when Matt Doherty sloppily gifted possession to Ben Brereton just outside the box, the youngster couldn't take advantage and David Edwards cleaned up the mess. There were a couple of bright moments, namely when an Cavaleiro cross was turned just past his own post by David Vaughan, or when Dicko side-footed Doherty's centre narrowly wide from close range. But otherwise Wolves were off the pace and no doubt received a rollocking from a visibly frustrated Lambert at half time. It was all summed up by Cavaleiro kicking the corner flag instead of the ball when trying to take a corner. But the second half was a different story. Wolves came out with more of a spring in their step, pushing Forest deeper, and turned the pressure up a notch by seeing more of the ball in good areas. It hadn't yielded much in terms of goalmouth action, though. But then the game came to life in the most dramatic of minutes, specifically minute 62 Forest should have taken the lead, first when Zach Clough was brilliantly tackled by Cavaleiro when through on goal - the ball broke for Assombalonga who had the goal at his mercy but Conor Coady was on the line to deny him with a goal-saving block. Wolves broke at pace, Weimann raced down the right and crossed low for Dicko who slammed into the net from close range to send Molineux potty. It was exhilarating fare, in  sharp contrast to the previous hour, and an emotional Dicko lapped it up after his second goal since his injury comeback. And thereafter Wolves were pretty comfortable. They almost doubled their lead when Weimann cut inside to curl just wide of the far post, while Bodvarsson lifted the noise volume with a typically robust run and shot, which was blocked.  There was time for a bit of late drama, though, when Lonergan saved brilliantly from Carayol at point blank range, seconds after Danny Fox had seen red for two yellow cards. The relief at full time was palpable.

Match facts

After winning seven consecutive   league games against Forest between 1997 and 2008, Wolves are winless in the most recent three (D1 L2).  Nottingham Forest are without a win against Wolves in four league games (D2 L2).  Wolves have won their last four league games; they have not won five consecutively in the second tier since November 2008, when they won seven in a row. Nottingham Forest have lost a league-high 27 points from leading positions in the Championship this season.

39 17-04-01 Wolves 3 Batth (9', 41'), Costa (82') Cardiff 1 Zohore (12')  HT 2-1

Beeb - Danny Batth scored twice as Wolves beat Cardiff City to move seven points clear of the Championship relegation zone. Wolves captain Batth opened the scoring with a header for his second goal of the season.  Kenneth Zohore's ninth goal in nine games brought Cardiff level soon after but a second header from Batth restored Wolves' lead before half time. Helder Costa's fine individual goal sealed a fourth successive win for Wolves with seven minutes remaining.

Wolves 3 Cardiff 1 - Report and pictures

A double from captain Danny Batth helped Wolves to a 3-1 victory as they won their fourth match in a row.

Danny Batth of Wolverhampton Wanderers celebrates after scoring a goal to make it 2-1 image: http://www.expressandstar.com/wpmvc/wp/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/AMA4004601.jpg

Batth headed Wolves into an early lead but they were soon pegged back by a Kenneth Zohore equaliser.  Batth netted again just before half time with Ben Marshall the architect again, as he had been for the opener, and in the second period Wolves exerted their authority when Helder Costa scored a marvellous third goal to seal the points.

Analysis

A pretty comfortable win - at home - plus two goals from Danny Batth....and it wasn't an April Fool. Wolves endured a dreadful February, a resurgent March and if April 1 is anything to go by the rest of the month could be pretty fun, writes Tim Spiers at Molineux.  Despite a couple of early scares they saw off Cardiff's considerable threat with relative ease in the second half here as they continued their impressive staving off of a relegation dogfight. A few weeks ago 'streetwise' was the quality Lambert said his side needed to possess, as they struggled to pull clear of the bottom three. Well in their last three victories they've certainly been that. There was a time at 1-1 here when Cardiff's aerial bombardment threatened to see them overpower Wolves, as they had in the reverse fixture in December. But Wolves saw it through - and after the break they nullified the opposition and killed them off.  It was a mature performance, full of relentless hard work from the likes of Andreas Weimann and Dave Edwards, but also excellent quality through the whipped crosses of Ben Marshall and the sensational feet of Helder Costa who rounded off this win with a goal to cherish. Wolves duly made it four wins in a row for the first time since January 2016. But more importantly they extended the margin to the bottom three to eight points. There are the makings of a very effective Championship team here. If safety can be secured sooner rather than later then the dress rehearsal for next year can begin in earnest. Lambert was forced into making one change from the team that beat Fulham 3-1 before the international break. Carl Ikeme failed a fitness test on a hamstring injury and Andy Lonergan was drafted in for his first appearance since December 1. Wolves knew they'd face a tough test from a team who, if the league had started when Neil Warnock took charge in October, would be third in the table. But the early signs were promising when they took an early lead. Marshall's pinpoint delivery - a theme of the afternoon - was expertly guided back into the six- yard box by Andreas Weimann and Danny Batth did the rest from close range. Things were potentially set up for a comfortable afternoon...but then this is Wolves, at Molineux, so of course it didn't work like that. Cardiff's aerial bombardment, which Wolves couldn't cope with in the reverse fixture (a 2-1 win for the Bluebirds in December) made life uncomfortable for a shaky defence. And that led to a brisk equaliser when a flailing Lonergan was caught off guard and in-form striker Zohore headed past him, with appeals for offside to no avail. The goal rocked Wolves, who weren't dealing with Aron Gunnarsson's flings from the flanks. Another long throw saw Junior Hoilett shoot just wide, and then a corner was horribly punched by Lonergan who was grateful the ball skimmed off his hand and dropped beneath him to collect. When Gunnarsson then missed the target with a free 12-yard shot when it was easier to score, it looked like being a torrid afternoon. But, gradually, Wolves improved. Their number of long balls decreased and Marshall, Cavaleiro and Costa began to stretch the Cardiff defence. Then, not long before half time, they regained the lead. Again it was a piercing Marshall cross and again it was a Batth header that did for Cardiff. The second half picked up where the first left off, although Wolves looked far more secure at the back. Chances were at a premium for both teams, with referee Andy Davies the centre of attention instead when he waved away appeals for a clear foul on Marshall just outside the box, and then booked Joe Ralls for a horror tackle on Lee Evans with the home fans screaming for red.

Then came a chance apiece - Batth headed a Marshall corner just over as he narrowly became the first Wolves centre half to score a hat-trick since John De Wolf in 1995. Cardiff went even closer - Craig Noone smacked a long-range effort off the upright.  Lambert looked to shore things up, with Marshall and Cavaleiro withdrawn for Saiss and Bodvarsson, and soon after the points should have been wrapped up but Costa, Evans and Edwards somehow contrived to mess it up when Wolves were four on two. But they didn't have to wait long for that third goal...and what a goal it was. The magic of Costa lit up sun-kissed Molineux with a simply stunning, jinking run and a cool finish when the keeper had already committed himself.  And that was that - a fairly regulation home win and Wolves' fourth victory on the bounce. February seems like a very long time ago.

Goalkeeper Carl Ikeme is Wolves' only major doubt for their Championship game at Molineux.  Ikeme has a hamstring strain and will be replaced by Andy Lonergan if he fails to recover as Paul Lambert's side go in search of a fourth straight win.

Cardiff have a doubt over Denmark Under-21 international striker Kenneth Zohore (calf), who has scored nine goals in his last 10 games. Midfielder Aron Gunnarsson and striker Rickie Lambert also have knocks.

Match facts

Wolves have scored in all but one of their last 19  league games against Cardiff. Cardiff have won five of their last seven league meetings with Wolves. Cardiff have scored more goals via set-pieces (27) than any Championship side in 2016/17. Only Nottm Forest (129) have made more changes to their starting line-up this season than Wolves (111). Kenneth Zohore has netted eight goals in his last eight appearances for Cardiff. Wolves have won just 18 points at  this season out of a possible 51 - the third lowest haul in the division after Wigan Athletic (15) and Rotherham United (16).

 Fulham 1 Wolves 3 - Report

Wolves made it three wins from three as they beat Fulham 3-1 at Craven Cottage. Tim Spiers E&S

Ivan Cavaleiro, on his first start since January, opened the scoring when he tapped home Helder Costa's pass just after the half hour mark.  Andreas Weimann doubled the lead shortly after half time and, although Fulham soon pulled one back through Denis Odoi, David Edwards secured the points after more superb work from Costa on the break.  Wolves official photographer caught Peter and Cheesey in the crowd

Analysis

No offence to the magnificent, historic, beautiful stadium that is Molineux, but can Wolves play the rest of the season away from home? For the second time in five days they took on an attractive, attacking London team on their own turf - and deservedly beat them, writes Tim Spiers at Craven Cottage. This time the margin of victory was greater, even if their dominance of the match wasn't, but Paul Lambert's fiercely committed team were good value for this most vital of three points. Who saw this past week coming? Wolves were booed off last Saturday but three wins from three matches have pulled them up to an unlikely 16th position - five points ahead  of the drop zone. Last week it was clear that if they reproduced their Rotherham performance every week Wolves would be relegated. Well, if Wolves are away from home they're a completely different  animal. For four successive away matches they've been the better team, unluckily losing to Reading, drawing when they should have won at Ipswich and now beating  Brentford and Fulham. Cavaleiro in a free role was inspired, but the performance of Costa topped that. His two magnificent assists were the difference here. Lambert suggested he'd take the shackles off and the boss, who came under severe criticism during his team's dire losing run, deserves credit for the game plan he implemented here, restricting space for Fulham and playing them like a fiddle on the counter. The worry, though, is that six of Wolves' last eight are at home. Should they transfer their away form to Molineux then survival won't be an issue. Lambert went with the team that powered Wolves to victory in the second half at Brentford (bar Morgan Gibbs-White who came on for the final seconds) with Cavaleiro and Ben Marshall replacing Nouha Dicko and George Saville, who dropped to the bench. The Wolves boss had called Fulham the best footballing side in the Championship. Well, in the first 45 minutes Wolves took them on - and were deservedly ahead at the break. An open and attractive half of football saw the action flow from end to end, with both sides creating a number of chances. Wolves attacked - and defended - in big numbers, expending plenty of energy but not letting play-off-chasing Fulham have a moment's peace. That even included the home goalkeeper, with Wolves surrounding the Fulham box for goal kicks and forcing a number of errors from their defence. Cavaleiro, playing in a free role, caused trouble from the off and excelled with the freedom that Lambert had on Friday suggested the Portguese man needed to get the best from him. He almost slipped Costa - who picked up where he left off at Brentford - with an early through ball, before whistling a shot across goal and wide from a brisk counter involving Marshall and Weimann. Marshall, who covered so much ground in protecting Doherty but also breaking forward, forced keeper David Button into a sprawling save from 18 yards, while Costa also fired a long-range effort down the keeper's throat. Everyone in a lime green shirt was working hard, even flair player Costa - and his determination created the opening goal. Costa harried Fredericks out of possession near the corner flag, shrugged off the full back and ambled into the box before playing to Cavaleiro who couldn't miss from six yards. It was the least Wolves deserved. Yes Fulham created opportunities of their own - Kebano shooting just wide, Aluko firing at Ikeme from a dangerous position and Kevin McDonald almost doing the inevitable when he sent a free header wide - but Wolves had earned their lead. They had also protected their goal well, with Evans and Edwards sitting deep to deny Fulham's marauding midfielders space, while Hause made a couple of vital blocks and interceptions. Far from sitting back on their lead Wolves came racing out of the traps in the second half. Costa almost teed up Cavaleiro up for number two but his pass was intercepted in the nick of time. However just a minute later Wolves doubled their advantage. Coady's ball reached Weimann and he emphatically beat the keeper to score his second goal in three games. Fulham have been one of the form sides in the league of late and their response was a positive one. They pressed Wolves deeper back and, just seven minutes after Weimann's strike, they pulled one back when Odoi picked up Batth's clearance and boomed one in from range.  With the hosts seeing so much of the ball Lambert took off a tiring Cavaleiro - his work done - for Dicko, to defend from the front and try and get a third. And then, with the midfield battle being lost, on came Romain Saiss to do some smothering and shore things up with 23 minutes to go, Marshall the man to depart. It was now one-way traffic, albeit with Wolves adequately protecting Carl Ikeme with a wall of green shirts as the hosts sprayed it around looking for an opening. But they didn't account for the magic of Costa. The wing wizard raced down the right, got to the byline and crossed for Edwards who tapped home in front of goal. It sparked wild scenes in front of Wolves' 2,300 travelling fans. The remaining 18 minutes were a breeze, with Ikeme barely tested. What a week it's been.

Fulham are again likely to be without club captain Scott Parker, who is struggling with a back injury.  Winger Floyd Ayite remains doubtful with a hamstring problem, while Chelsea loanee Lucas Piazon has a broken jaw.

Wolves winger Ben Marshall did not start Tuesday's win at Brentford because of a dead leg. Defender Richard Stearman, on loan from Fulham, is ineligible, but Mike Williamson could return after being rested for the victory at Griffin Park.  Jordan Graham is close to returning to the first  following a long-term knee injury, but Michal Zyro is not expected to be fit for some weeks.

MATCH FACTS

Wolves have won consecutive league games  to Fulham; they last recorded three in a row in December 1962.

Fulham have won a league-high 22 points from losing positions this season in the Championship.

The Whites have also attempted the most shots in the Championship this season overall (585), 30 more than any other side.

Seven of Helder Costa's nine league goals this season for Wolves have come  from .

Fulham are now unbeaten in eight Championship matches (W5 D3) - the longest current run along with Ipswich Town.33  Tue 14th  March       19:45   Brentford  1 Colin (31' ) Wolves2  Doherty (86' ), Costa (89' )

HT 1-0

Wolves scored twice in the last four minutes as they came from behind to beat Brentford and move four points clear of the relegation zone. Full-back Maxime Colin fired low into the corner to give the Bees an half-time lead against the run of play. Nouha Dicko hit the bar and Lee Evans had a shot blocked on the line for Wolves before Matt Doherty  levelled.  The visitors continued to dominate and Ivan Cavaleiro crossed for Helder Costa to volley in a deserved winner. Wolves are now 18th in the Championship, having picked up seven points from their past three games, and sit just five points behind their opponents.

Frenchman Colin showed the composure of a striker to slot  his fourth goal of the season from Konstantin Kerschbaumer's flick, but the defeat for Dean Smith's side was their second at  in the space of four days.  Ex-Benfica forward Costa ended an eight-game drought to snatch the points after Doherty had converted Ben Marshall's fine cross.  Brentford have kept just one clean sheet from their 13 league games in 2017, while Paul Lambert's Wolves side now have three s between them and the bottom three.

Brentford boss Dean Smith: "That was certainly the worst performance at Griffin Park in my time here. I don't even think we had a first gear and Wolves were better from start to finish. Today we were out-battled. They won every loose ball, won the second balls and I don't think we won a header all game. Normally we out-football sides but we couldn't pass water. If you get beaten by a side that outmanoeuvres you, you can take it, but they had more desire."

Wolves boss Paul Lambert told BBC WM 95.6:

"Even at 1-0, I didn't think we should have been down, the lads were excellent. There was no problem for me. I never felt severe stress or pressure at all, even though we were a goal down, because we were creating. It was just a matter of time before we got one. In the second half, we looked great."

Brentford could rest midfielder Nico Yennaris, who has been playing despite a calf problem in recent games. Andreas Bjelland is likely to be out again after missing two matches with a hamstring injury, and Josh McEachran has not recovered from an ankle injury.

Ivan Cavaleiro could start for Wolves after making his return from injury as a late substitute in Saturday's win over bottom side Rotherham United.  Manager Paul Lambert has no new injuries or suspension to contend with.  Ivan Cavaleiro has made 25 appearances for Wolves since signing from Monaco in a £7m deal in August

Match facts

The Bees have won their last two  league games against Wolves, scoring seven and conceding none. Wolves have won just three of their 11 previous league trips to Griffin Park (D1 L7). Brentford have kept just one clean sheet in their 12 league games in 2017, with the most recent one coming at the end of January against Aston Villa (3-0). Helder Costa has scored six of his eight league goals  from Molineux this season - the only Championship midfielder to have scored more on the road this term is Fulham's Tom Cairney (seven). Jota has been directly involved in six of Brentford's last nine league goals (four goals and two assists).

Andreas Weimann got the only goal against Rotherham as Wolves edged to a nervy first win in eight games.  Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme twice rescued his side with saves from Danny Ward before Weimann scored in first-half injury time. That came 10 minutes after Rotherham keeper Lewis Price had saved Helder Costa's penalty. But Wolves could not add to their lead and, but for a poor late miss by Semi Ajayi, Rotherham would have drawn. Defeat for the Millers leaves the Championship's bottom club still with only one away point this season. Wolves' first victory since winning at Barnsley on 31 January, three days after their FA Cup win at Liverpool, leaves Paul Lambert's side still just a point clear of trouble. The hosts could have been two goals down inside the first 20 minutes after lone Millers striker Ward was twice sent clear, the first thanks to a careless misplaced pass from Romain Saiss. But keeper Ikeme twice repelled the threat, as Ward fired straight at him each time. Wolves wasted a chance to go one up on 34 minutes when, having himself gone down under Joe Mattock's challenge, Costa took a weak penalty that was saved at a comfortable height to his left by Rotherham keeper Price. But, on the stroke of half time, Weimann chased an apparently lost cause, won possession and rounded Price before tucking the ball into an empty net. Seconds later, he clattered into full-back Will Vaulks with an inflammatory challenge right in front of the away dugout that ended up with a booking for Weimann and a lengthy lecture for both managers from referee Jeremy Simpson.  After a poor first half, the second half was more open, with chances at either end before centre-half Ajayi's late miss.

Wolves host Championship bottom club Rotherham United at Molineux looking for their first win in eight matches. Defender Mike Williamson is available after suspension, while £13m winger Helder Costa may start after coming off the bench at Ipswich on Tuesday.

Rotherham will have forward Danny Ward available again after he missed Tuesday's defeat by Brighton. The Millers are 19 points adrift of safety and have lost nine of their last 10 league games.

Match facts

Rotherham have won only one of their last 20 league meetings with Wolves - a 1-0 win at the New York Stadium in August 2014. Wolves' draw at Ipswich on Tuesday ended a run of six successive defeats, five of which were in the league. The Millers have picked up just one point from their 18  league games this season - fewer than any other side in the top four tiers of English football. Helder Costa has been involved in four of Wolves' last six  league goals (one goal, three assists). Rotherham have conceded in each of their last 16 league games - their longest run without a clean sheet since 1991.

Ipswich Town 0 Wolves 0 - Report by Tim Spiers

Wolves finally ended their losing streak as they claimed a 0-0 draw away at Ipswich Town. Paul Lambert's team were left ruing their luck after hitting the woodwork twice in the final five minutes.  Jon Dadi Bodvarsson struck a post and Ben Marshall curled a free kick onto the bar as Wolves were left frustrated.

Analysis  pic Time Spiers - 443 WW fans pre match

Well, it's a start.  Wolves stopped the rot at Portman Road to end their six-game winless streak - but yet again it was a case of what might have been, writes Tim Spiers. In fact this was deja vu from Reading just four days ago. Again it was a sleep-inducing first half of little to no action. Again Wolves greatly improved after the break and controlled the game for long spells. Again they couldn't make their dominance count. This time they hit the post and the crossbar, both in the final five minutes, but it just wouldn't go in. At least they avoided losing six consecutive matches at this level for the first time since 1984/85. They also kept their first clean sheet since January. Small steps, but steps nonetheless.

If Wolves had succumbed to their old boss Mick McCarthy's team and lost seven matches in a row, the knives would had been out for Lambert. They would also have moved to within goal difference of being in the relegation zone. But now they can at least see the next week as a window of opportunity. Wolves host Rotherham on Saturday - a team that has earned one solitary point from 18 away matches this season - before next Tuesday's trip to Brentford, a game on hand on all of their relegation rivals bar Blackburn.

If Lambert can make it a dream week, Wolves can pull clear of the mess they still find themselves in. As at Reading on Saturday changes were expected, but yet again Lambert had a few surprises up his sleeve, the main one being to drop £13m record signing Helder Costa to the bench. Danny Batth, Matt Doherty, Jack Price, Andreas Weimann and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson came into what looked like a hard-working team set up not to get beat. And that's exactly how it played out in a truly dire first half. Wolves gave little away, but created next to nothing themselves. They did, as is the fashion these days, have a contentious decision go against them - Doherty raced into the box from Weimann's through ball, there was a tangle of legs and the defender appeared to handle the ball as he fell, but the referee gave a free kick inches outside the box instead of what looked like a penalty. The two teams had one sniff of goal apiece - David Edwards saw his header from a tight angle blocked, while Carl Ikeme had to get down low to save David McGoldrick's shot. That was pretty much it, although Doherty was also in the right place to clear in front of his own goal after Tom Lawrence skinned Kortney Hause and crossed low into the box. Wolves added a new tactic - the long throws of Ben Marshall, who was their best player in a first half team performance that could kindly be described as industrious.  The long balls to Bodvarsson were too frequent and not enough players were on the same wavelength. Doherty and Hause were nervy at the back and, while all three midfielders closed down well enough, they conceded possession too readily, particularly Romain Saiss. All in all it was a tough watch. The 300 or so who had made the very long trip east - one of Wolves' lowest away followings in the past decade - weren't exactly being rewarded with a feast of football.

The second half, mercifully, improved. The game opened up and both sides had chances, with Ipswich threatening with a barrage of set pieces. Wolves were starting to look useful on the counter attack and Weimann began to heavily influence proceedings down the right. It was the Austrian's low cross to Bodvarsson which led to Wolves' first big chance of the game when Marshall side-footed wide. The front three were all getting into good areas but, yet again, that crucial killer instinct was deserting Wolves, with a number of near misses in terms of the final pass as Lambert's team began to dominate proceedings. It was the same old story. Wolves had most of the play and had Ipswich on the back foot for long spells but keeper Bartosz Bialkowski wasn't tested. On came Costa with eight to go, replacing the impressing Weimann. They continued to press - Bodvarsson hit a post from a tight angle and then Marshall curled a free kick onto the bar, both within four minutes of each other.

The footballing Gods had deserted Wolves.

Ipswich Town midfielder Emyr Huws, goalscorer in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Brentford, has a hamstring injury and is a doubt for the visit of Wolves. Luke Hyam is sidelined for two to three weeks with an ankle injury.

Wolves take on former manager Mick McCarthy's Ipswich looking to avoid a seventh straight defeat. Ivan Cavaleiro returns to the squad after eight games out with a knee injury, but suspended defender Mike Williamson is missing for the visitors. On his first league start in 15 months, Williamson was sent off five minutes before full-time in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Reading for a second bookable offence.  As well as going out of the FA Cup at  to Chelsea, Wolves have lost five league games in a row to fall within a point of the Championship drop zone.

Match facts

Wolves last lost seven matches on the trot in March/April 2012, all in the Premier League, when Terry Connor was manager following the sacking of McCarthy. Wolves have not won on their last two visits to Portman Road, since a 2-0 victory in September 2012. Since then, following the appointment of ex-Wolves boss McCarthy in November 2012, Ipswich are unbeaten in their last six league games against Wolves, the last four of which have been draws. Wolves have won a league-high 57.1% of their Championship points  from  (20 out of an overall total of 35) this season. Tom Lawrence has six Championship goals in 2017 so far - no other Ipswich player has scored more than twice.

35  Sat   4th  March       15:00   Reading  2 Kermorgant (48'), McShane (78')  Wolves 1 Marshall (50'), Williamson (Sent off 85')

Well, bringing Williamson back was a great idea as he makes a stupid tackle and is sent off.  Very poor game (Ady WiIliams)

Reading strengthened their Championship play-off hopes as they inflicted Wolves' fifth successive league defeat.  The game burst into life after half-time as Yann Kermorgant deflected Liam Moore's shot past Carl Ikeme to put the hosts ahead. Two later Ben Marshall touched in Nouha Dicko's fine cross to level.  But Paul McShane met John Swift's free-kick with an inch-perfect header before Wolves defender Mike Williamson was sent off late on.

Reading seek their first win in three games after successive defeats by Championship promotion rivals Huddersfield Town and Brighton.  January's EFL Young Player of the Month John Swift may be recalled, but Reece Oxford (hamstring) will not feature.

Wolves defender Kortney Hause is expected to return after being left out last weekend for disciplinary reasons.   Having slipped to 20th, just two points clear of danger, Wolves hope to avoid a fifth straight league defeat. None of Wolves' injured players will be back in time for the trip to the Madejski Stadium, but winger Ivan Cavaleiro (knee) is set to resume training next week after a month-long absence. And Jordan Graham, also disciplined along with Hause by boss Paul Lambert last week, is back in training following 13 months out with a cruciate knee ligament injury.

Reading manager Jaap Stam told BBC Radio Berkshire: "We need to be realistic in what we are trying to achieve. The thing for us is we need to learn from everything.  You need to learn to work under pressure, to play in big games against better s. We need to learn against very good s to know what do differently.  I said at the beginning of the season that hopefully we could end up in the top 10. It is in a period of over two to three years that we are trying to build a  to maybe go up to the Premier League."

Wolves boss Paul Lambert told BBC WM: "In games, we're having most of the ball but we have to finish off. The important thing is to never be frightened to miss. Hopefully, after getting his goal last weekend, Nouha Dicko will now go on a run. We have to be better in both boxes. But there's not too much wrong. We got there with confidence."
